It may not always be funny (although that’s not limited to multiple identities), but it is harmless. This is apublic bulletin boardfor cryin’ out loud. It isn’t the United Nations Security Council or the International Court of Justice. And as far as obnoxious posters go, take them with a grain of salt – but don’t take the bait.

I dunno. If you were running Tom's hamburger stand, and some guy with a competing hamburger stand starts a "Tom's burgers gave me the runs!" thread - no big deal. But if he then responds with 5 different sock puppets who also got the runs - it might cost you some customers.

Posted By: Somethingz FishyYes, there are times when having multiple screen names makes sense, like people whose primary MOL identity is known, which would otherwise prevent them from discussing things that would be best or necessary for them to discuss anonymously.

Those who need to use different names for different topics have no spine. I don't believe in multiple names at all, and think it's mostly the coward's way out of a topic. If you can't say something under your real name, then don't say it at all. Those with multiple names must be hilarious at bars. If a difficult topic comes up, do you run to the bathroom and perform a Clark Kent maneuver? Personally, I'd like to see multiple names banished from here, it just allows the spineless to hide behind a facade.

Spineless? Cowards? Relax, Deffie. I'm afraid if something important comes up, you'll have a heart attack. Put your empathetic hat on and chill wiff da peeps.

I'm with GT...been here too long and only ever had one name.

I can see having another name, if you have a personal issue/concern and really need to keep it private, but for the most part, if I wouldn't say it to your face I won't post it either.

Not a big fan of the multiple personalities.

Lmao Soulful...i could Not agree more!!!

^ what Deffie said.

Actually, I have Only one name because I don't need another screen name and password to remember... I think my head will explode of I add one more! Lol

I don't own an empathetic hat. If someone needs an additional personality to ask a question, I think they have larger social issues, and perhaps the question should be left to real-life and with non-virtual humans. However, if someone needs an additional personality to attack someone, that's just plain pathetic.

I think I will start using my real name instead of this handle

No? That says a lot. And it may be worse than a second screen name.

Wasn't it established recently a poster was using multiple names to attack others and also agree with their own point of view? That IS pathetic!

Funny, since that poster was " outed " I have not seen hide nor hair of them ( in any name) lol

Nope, not for humans, only for animals.

That needs no comment from me. Or from my other screen name, mammabear.

i applaud everything The Soulful Mr T has said herein. he's a brilliant wit and a charming soul.

OK, I confess: I also post as Pennboy2. I almost kept it to myself, but threat of a petition led me to the straight and narrow. #saved

H'mm. I was going to disagree with the first part of this, but then I realized I actually agree with it. The second statement is so true it surprises me anyone could disagree.

I'm with Fishy and Defcon, although I have a preference for Fishy's style of expression.

It may not always be funny (although that’s not limited to multiple identities), but it is harmless.

When it comes to local issues, I disagree. It may not be the end of the world but it is stopping us from having important community discussions and it is discouraging others from getting involved in those dialogs. It also makes MOL look fringe to people who don't post. Because of this, many non-users--including those who might be in a position to do something about it--completely dismiss anything that is brought up on MOL.

Will this destroy us? No, but I do consider it harmful to our community. It will lose us the benefit that MOL provides us.

Most people find they completely agree with me. For many, it takes an extended amount of time, but they all come around eventually, it's inevitable.

Love you, Deffie. :flowers:

:rolling:

There are quite a few posters on MOL (real name or not) whose IRL identity is well known to quite a few of us regulars on MOL. I can see one of these persons, when having a deeply personal issue they do not want to publicize to their friends wanting to use a new (and likely temporary) identity to ask for opinions, assistance, resources, etc. to help them work through the problem. Other than that, I really don't see what is to be gained by using more than one on-line identity on MOL.

Writing of identities, how many of us remember those on-line identiies which were actually held by several different posters using the same ID/password?

This is my only screen name on MOL. I chose not to use my real name as I worked for the school district when I joined and didn't want hassles with anyone there (a prior director had told me I couldn't reply to a survey being conducted by a friend without getting my response vetted by District headquarters and I wanted to avoid that here). I really don't think they could stop my saying what I wanted to, but why go through the hassle.

This is my only screen name. I agree 100% with Fishy and Defcon.
