A passerby with a cellphone video'd a cop committing murder

I suppose if it's considered evidence they might?

No. Not without a warrant.

The actions of the chief have kept this from becoming a disaster.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/04/10/us/south-carolina-police-shooting-seen-as-crime-fighting-gone-awry.html

After the shooting on Saturday, Mr. Scott’s older brother, Anthony Scott, 52, went to the crime scene. He stood taking pictures of his brother’s covered body with his phone when police officers and detectives approached. Three of them surrounded him, telling him to turn over his phone, he said.

“So, are you going to kill me, too, now?” Mr. Scott said he asked them.

He eventually handed them his phone. Hours later, Chief Driggers arrived, returned Mr. Scott’s phone and offered his condolences.

“The chief was very kind, very kind,” Mr. Scott said. “He was very gentlemanly, very different from the way everyone else was acting. Everyone else — it was eerie how they were acting. They were cocky.”

The video is brutal to watch. I watch it and wonder if the other Police Officer that arrives ever thinks "We're cuffing the wrong guy!"

None of the "officers" that arrived on the scene contradicted the killers account. They all deserve to be fired and prosecuted.

I think this is a very rare case where I wholeheartedly agree with you.

Likewise.

@Woot @TylerDurden

well its nice to be in agreement every now and then. I thought Woot, that we agree about quite a few things but I maybe im mistaken.

I agree. I was referring to Tyler

This story sickens me on every level except that it appears to have been captured on video. The reality is that this happens more than some want to admit and may be similar to what happened in Ferguson. I hope this police officer rots in jail and I hope sweeping policing reforms occur in the least likely of places-South Carolina.

Have any of read some of the comments made by readers on online magazines/papers? Websites? What's wrong with us as a nation? Is there a moral disconnect in some of us that make us hateful simply because of an accent or a skin color?

Some of the comments range from "If the n*gger didn't run, he wouldn't have been shot" to "What is a Black man doing driving a Mercedes? DRUG DEALER!"

WTF is going on in our country? What's going on with us?

A footnote: I have a casual friend who is Black and lives in Bergen Co. Her family is the only Black family on her small street. Other families are White and Indian. She said she might go into real estate. Great, I say. She said when she announced to her circle of friends that she might go into real estate, many told her that their criteria, if they had to do it all over again, is that they didn't want to live in a "highly" mixed area (what does that even mean?), didn't want to live near or next to gay couples/families and didn't want synagogues nearby.

She said to me, "Kibbe, I said to one of them, you know I'm Black, right?"

Again, WTF?

WTF indeed.

This one is exceptionally crazy. Guy stole a horse during the getaway.

Its like a mob / gang mentality with these guys. Retraining and mandatory standards of behavior needs to be applied. The police haven't realized yet that in the 21st century their actions will be filmed.

Policy and accountability would firing the cops who participate in these types of "apprehensions".

I guess its better than hanging tho...

Chris Rock has been pulled over three times in seven weeks.

@kibbegirl never read the comments!!!

I blame it all on 9/11. Authorities gained more power, Patriot Act, barricades erected in the public space, crazy talk by politicians. This attitude has crept into the mentality of our police.

Could be, but Kent State and many other National Guard/police events occurred before 9/11. Awareness of other incidents before 9/11 may be limited because if absence of cell phone/cameras. Cell phones have made an enormous difference.

Sadly he may not even go to prison...

Yes, should have thought of that.

Did you see what happened in San Bernardino? Here seven cops beat up, kicked and banged on a white kid. Sheriff says it was "difficult for the police to control their adrenalin." These guys have gone off the deep end.

As long as the jury gets to see him drop the taser next to the victim, I think he'll be going away for a long time.

And again in Michigan...and Baltimore. What is going on?

Test. This is only a test.

It's always been going on. It effects both white and black but predominately Black men/teens and Latino men/teens. It also effects the mentally disturbed of any color. Holding hands up in the air, not having a weapon, asking questions, not moving fast enough, moving too fast, not giving the right answers, driving, walking, biking, playing outdoors, holding a cell phone and riding in an ambulance all seem to be "triggers" for being shot and killed by some officers.

When it happened to Rodney King, the consensus was "He must have done something." Okay. Maybe he did break a law but did he deserve that type of physical brutality by so many officers when it was clear that he was incapable of running away? Walking away? During the entire video of the beating, Mr. King never fought back. When the Black and Latino community saw this, it was truly a head shaker but it wasn't like we were unaware of these types of beatings by some officers. Some whites and yes, some blacks, refused to believe that police officers would behave in such a way and again, the culprit must have done something to deserve that type of beating. I shake my head at this because these are probably the same people who would say water boarding was unjust -- even for terrorists. Just because it hasn't happened to you doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

Cellphone recording doesn't seem to stop it. Protests doesn't seem to stop it. Juries don't seem to stop it. So, again, it continues.

I'm not surprised, after all that has happened, that this is happening now.

Wondering why this has gone under the radar...

Why is it that a British newspaper is the one to do these reports? At least someone is on it.

http://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2015/jun/01/black-americans-killed-by-police-analysis

I read the Brit papers too and their stories about US health and crime are far better than ours. I think they have better stories for a reason: they enjoy spotlighting American ills. Honestly, we are the country often pointing out what others are doing wrong and the British newspapers are writing about our wrongs, our injustice and our big problems. But again, the stories are well done.

Did everyone notice that a Cleveland municipal judge just found probable cause to charge the officer in the child shooting incident with many crimes, including murder, and it's now up to the prosecuting attorney to make the case?

these police murders have to stop.

Alton Sterling, Philandro Castile, and 5 more already this month.

Killed by cops.   Its time to stop apologizing for police violence against us.  The police have no right to take lives this way and the perpetrators of this senseless violence must be sentenced to hard time.  Until there are repercussions for this criminal, racist, hateful behavior there will be no change.
