A&P (Pathmark) circling the drain?

Spoke to some personnel at Pathmark today. They have been informed it will become a Stop and Shop.

The word in the aisles is that Stop and Shop's press release may have been premature.

Sheena posted on FB nine hours ago that Stop and Shop would take over Pathmark.

(Is it okay to call Sheena Sheena in this kind of post? Or does it lack respect? Should I call her VP Collum? Hmmm.)

Just don't call her a bad poker player.

Interesting, very local tie to A&P history...highlights: American who made large fortune from the early growth of chain also served as Mayor of Orange, NJ, in the late 19th century and is buried in Rosedale Cemetery in Orange...if you've ever driven by the cemetery (across street from Star Tavern) and thought it looked like a nice cemetery, that's what it was built to be. And yes, Orange was a different place back in the day...some of the Colgates, as in Colgate-Palmolive, also lived in Orange.

So, A&P owned this store. It wasn't an A&P, though, it was a Pathmark. Does Stop & Shop purchasing the store mean that it will become a Stop & Shop, or could it become a dirty Pathmark owned by Stop & Shop?
I would prefer an outright overhaul to a Stop & Shop, personally. The Pathmark, while useful, is really dirty and sad. Also, that seafood counter? The stench!!!

I guess the rambling discussions don't make it clear that A&P has owned Pathmark since 2007. They operate under six different names. However, four are almost identical inside, A&P, Pathmark, Waldbaum's, and Super Fresh. If yiou'ver ever shopped at a larger, modern A&P, not the old Maplewood one, Pathmark isn't that different.

But I still haven't answered your question. A&P is selling 120 stores, 3 of them in NJ to Stop & Shop. The SO store will be acquired by S&S, and certainly will be gut renovated or demolished to match Stop & Shop's current standards. We'll end up with a new store either way. We have to hope that the store won't be allowed to decline as the Union ShopRite has since relocating, or as some feel the Union S&S isn't as clean as locations in higher income areas.

I believe the Stop and Shop purchase has to be approved by the Bankruptcy Court which means creditors or other prospective purchasers can still file objections to the conveyance. An attempt by Stop and Shop to purchase many of the Big V stores in New York a while ago was ended by objections in the Bankruptcy Court.

Stevelvan: I had the opportunity recently to go through the house Mr. Colgate built on the edge of Seven Oaks for his Daughter as a wedding present. It is one of the most beautifully designed homes I've been in.

At the moment the deal is a "stalking horse". Meaning oter parties are welcome to step in an make better offers. But the bankruptcy filing is apparently "pre-packaged" meaning that A & P has agreement from its major creditors in advance of the filing. So it is not a done deal, but it is still much more likely than not.

Thanks for the clarification. As long as this all transpires, it's great news.
