Wind Chill Advisory Thurs - Sat, Jan 4 - 6 (Winter Storm Warning CANCELlED)

Thank you as always Max!

It looks like it's predicted to feel like -14 degrees (negative!!) at rush hour tomorrow morning due to the strong winds.

Just wondering aloud at the possibility that they may decide to close school for another day to keep kids from walking to school in those temps and wind, especially with the heating issues at the schools.

Giordano Recycling has suspended all further pickups for Thursday, January 4, 2018. Please take the Toters recycling containers in as soon as possible to avoid the wind blowing recycling throughout the neighborhood.

All remaining resident's recycling will be collected on Monday, January 8th.

Please call Giordano for any updates with regards to the collection at 800-216-2250 ext. 2

The wind is playing havoc with the recycling bins out today in SO. We have drifts of newspapers shooting down the street at 20mph. I hope the trucks will come around but I wouldn’t be surprised if they don’t.

We missed our garbage pick up last Monday (Christmas) and again this Monday (New Years) so that is overflowing as well.

Yeah, I had to go out and drag my recycling back in. That’s after already going out and picking up the bin from the street, where it had fallen over.

Thanks, as always, Max!

Any thoughts as to current timing? Like when the snow will stop here?

This will last into midafternoon.  I think it will be over between 3:00 and 5:00.

It’s super nasty outside so I don’t blame the recyclers and garbage haulers but the post holiday timing is awful.

They should have a special post Christmas pickup to deal with the boxes. We have bags of recycling that we couldn’t fit into our ordinary toters.

When we lived in SO our recycling guys took boxes that weren’t in the toter as long as they were flattened.

I'm in Maplewood.  We normally have trash pickup by WM on Monday and assumed they would pickup on Tuesday.  It still hadn't been picked up by late afternoon and when I called they said our trash would be picked up on Thursday.  Now it's been scheduled for tomorrow.  While I don't blame them for not picking up trash in this weather, I agree the timing is absolutely lousy.  Our trash has really begun to pile up.

For that reason (and from long experience) we have extra trash cans.  They will empty all three when they come.

My solar panels started producing (only 100 kw) after the wind picked up. Must have blown the snow off them.

CNN just reported that it will be colder than Mars.

That is all.

Coming up to Noon.  How do the weather geeks see this one playing out?

Roads are not great, had a doctor appointment, that I didn't want to miss.  Coming back up SO Ave. thru the S turns, was a challenge.  If you don't need to go out, stay home.

I'm in Manhattan. I was out at 9am and again at 10am. We went from about 2-1/2" to about 3-1/2" in that hour, so one inch per hour by my observation.

I jogged in it a bit. The snow is soft and makes landing easy.

I also have M/Th pick-up.  In my experience, WM never picks up the next day when a Monday pick-up is canceled due to a holiday.  Usually, they will send out a robocall informing that the next pick-up will be on Thursday.   With the weather the way it is today, it may be next Monday at the earliest before we receive the next pick-up.  With pick-ups canceled for both the 25th and the 1st, three cans may not be enough.

The official word is that no one should be on the roads unless it’s an emergency.

From Maplewood PD:

State of Emergency Declared 1/4/18
A State of Emergency has been declared on 1/4/18. All county, municipal, and state roads must be clear of all vehicles, including disabled vehicles. There will be no parking permissions granted.

Address/Location Maplewood Police Department NJ 1618 Springfield Ave Maplewood, NJ 07040

Also, just got the notice that the town cancelled the jitney for this evening.  That is sure going to make for some unhappy commuters!

I went out to shovel already since it is presently "only" 23 degrees and will be much colder tomorrow. Was kind-of exhilarating actually.

Now I have to watch TV and take a nap later. Busy day.

I also shoveled a bit. Extremely wet and heavy. Much worse than I thought it would be.

Why isn't the news calling this storm a nor'easter instead of a bomb-whatever?

Those commercials aren’t going to sell themselves.

That said: We’ve had some thunder up here in MA. Kind of bomb-like I suppose.

Are we still looking at 4 to 6 inches total for this ?

Damn that photo makes us to be oh so insignificant. That's a huge storm.

Started shoveling at 11:30 this morning.  Just finished clearing a one shovel width path over 225 feet of sidewalk and a narrow path from the house to the sidewalk.  Still need to do at least one of the four cutouts to the street.  Snow was too heavy for me to do more today.  Will colder temperatures make it easier to move tomorrow???

Thank you Joan for doing the cut outs. Not everyone with a corner house does.

Well, that was short but exciting.

I find snowfalls comforting for some reason. The whiteness. There's a sense of quietness.

As long as I'm watching it from inside my warm home anyway.

How does it look for flights out of Newark tomorrow morning? Thanks.
