#SOFit15 Contestant Dinner - March 18 at Ricalton's w/ Award Winning Food Author!

How about a "weigh in" photo of the scale for those who can't make it in? :-D Just trying to help. I honestly doubt anyone is going to be trying to steal a few lbs dishonestly.

So true. I never really thought South Orange and Maplewood were super competitive anyway...

heh question

10-4 @annemarie! We're on it.

hahahhahah - oh right. There's that.

10 pm actually works for me! Yay! Usually when things are open late they only go until 7ish (commute means I'm not back in SO until 7:30). I also love the idea to send a pic of your scale!

The only thing is that scales all weigh differently so your home scale may not be consistent with whatever the town is using, thereby either gaining or losing you a few lbs at the next weigh in. When I was pregnant, my midwife had two offices, and I definitely preferred the office with the lighter scale. I'd travel 10 miles to the other office and gain 5 pounds!

I'm going to use this thread to post ongoing updates from the challenge for those who are following the progress.

I need to spread out all the shoutouts.

So for today, I'm happy to share that Maplewood Karate (amazing!!!!) is offering complimentary classes to the contestants each month to help them reach their goals.

Louis Toledo - - what a guy.

Medical scales should be 'Balance' bar scales. Unlike home scales, they can be calibrated.

My Dr. had a scale that was very wrong. It was off by 6 pounds and I kept getting the lecture about dropping 10 pounds. I calibrated the scale for her then I taught her staff how to check the calibration before each use.

When I approach one of these scales, I always check the calibration before I step on the scale.

Here is a photo of what you should see with both weights on ‘0’. Note that the far Right arrow is floating in the center of the slot.

This scale is in my The UPS Store and certified by the Dept. of Weights and Measures each year. It is Spot On.

COME SPIN WITH ME!!!

Happy to announce that Retro Fitness in West Orange will be extending some promotional love to participants of #SOFit15.

If you don't know about Retro, their gyms are bright and clean with a color scheme that promotes energy (or blinds you lol). The West Orange location has been open about a year. Membership to a retro gym allows you to work out in any of their locations, which there are many and their fees are pretty inexpensive. They have a "cardio movie theater", it's like being at the movies only while walking on a treadmill, you can get a couple of hours exercise without even knowing it, pretty neat. Most days they are open 5am-11pm. Personal trainers, child care, smoothie bar, the works....and of course....RPM (spinning) with me grin

For $20 a month you get the gym membership and access to all their locations and for $30 a month (VIP) you get access to all their group fitness classes, (pretty good deal seeing as many gyms charge an extra fee just for taking individual classes). For $30 a month you can take as many classes as you want.

Free guest passes are available and if you'd like to try some free introductory group fitness classes, all you have to do is say so.

Ordinarily, when joining, there is a $100 enrollment fee and a $20 processing fee. #SOFit15 participants will enjoy zero enrollment fee. (Right now there is a similar ongoing promotion, ending this month, however the deal will be in effect for #SOFit15 until June). In addition, the processing fee will be waived or returned to you as long as a certain amount of participants sign up. (20)

All you have to do is mention you are part of the #SOFit15 challenge. Our contact person there is Marlene Kelly.

I am working on additional goodies like monthly prizes.

Oh, and in case I haven't mentioned....Wednesday mornings, 9AM. RPM with ace789nj grin

Their local website: http://westorangenj.retrofitness.net

As for their group X classes, they offer Zumba, Yoga, RPM, Bodypump, Bodycombat, CX Works and others. If you're not familiar with the Les Mills group fitness classes....

Great article from Village Green, covers the first email that went out to contestants:

@ace789nj - - question about spinning and I was discussing this with some contestants today - is that a tough class for beginners who haven't done it before?

Also - thanks for supporting the challenge!!!

PS - the hashtag is #SOFit15 ;-)

Spinning can be as tough as you'd like to make it. That said, it is perfectly fine for beginners. I mean, you have to start somewhere right. Participants always have the ability to dial down their resistance or pull back on the intensity so that the workout is "comfortable" but I use that word loosely because the only way to improve your physical ability is to periodically work outside of your comfort level, push yourself...but we all know that.

Most instructors are available before class to help set up and guide new participants.

First timers... I tell 'em, do what you can. If you like it come back...if you hate it don't tell anyone lol, just kidding. It's natural for new folk to be nervous taking that first spin class (or any group x class) but after a few times, it gets addicting.

The first weigh-in is all day today from 7am to 10 pm at the Baird Center (5 Mead St.). If you're registered for the challenge this is the first official act to engage in the competition. Don't miss it!

Can't get to the Baird today. No car, bummer of a walk in the cold. Can you log me remote? I have no concern of who knows what about me.

On the calibrated balance scale I'm 209. If you are pulling 3 pounds for shoes, cell phones and clothing, book me at 206.

Please.

George, no cheating. You have to weigh yourself naked.

@jgberkeley not sure if that's against the rules or not (since I suppose you could be logging yourself heavier to increase your perceived weight loss) but I'm driving down after my kids are in bed, probably around 8pm if you need/want a ride.

George,. I'm in the book. call me and I'll pick u up and take you!

Thanx all, but I will pass on the rides.

Jennifer and I are a team. She has the car today and as the Minister of a Church, has an all day session in Nyack, NY and will not be home until 11 or so. We wanted to do this event together.

So, I booked a bill pay and bookeeping update for the Store, experience for myself tonight. During the Holiday I had little time to do this so I am behind, and my CPA who is a MOL'er and reading this is expecting me to do a Store Inventory soon, which I booked and staffed for tonight.

So, thanx. I guess Jennifer and I just will not make it.

Got to say, The Baird? Not really SO Central or easy to get to. I bet a lot of No Shows hit the books.

I could be wrong, later

Way to start off positive!

Fwiw - i think it's a perfectly fine place for a weigh in. Thank you to the staff there early and late to weigh us

Agree, George needs a pep talk from the rest of us!

(And, btw, Baird is our community center with ample space, parking. If you were at work, and it sounds like you were, why not walk over? That's a walk many of us take almost daily and it's maybe 8 minutes? 10?)

George, This is a great community effort and the vast majority of people stopped by last night to weigh in. I hope you come next time and, if this is not your scene after all, maybe keep that to yourself. This is big, big effort for many people. Changing a lifestyle is difficult and can be emotional. Nay-saying is the exact opposite of what we need.

So how many of the original 125 actually weighed in? I was one of the first, only 3-4 before me. Does one officially drop out and open a slot? Is there a waiting list? Day one was okay, no food cheating on my part. Let's see what day two brings!

Nice pic! It was a pleasure to see Doc and finally meet Sheena. Thank you for your enthusiasm and efforts. I've been looking for the right motivation to get me back off of sugar again. Here goes!

The weigh in took approximately 90 seconds, and I'm grateful for the long hours they were available! You guys were having a lot of fun for three people stuck in an empty room with a scale!

I went at 1ish - saw a friend there. another friend had gone mid morning. I imagine people came in dribs and drabs throughout the day. It was a long span of hours, after all, and 125 is not thaaaat many people.

of course I'm having my day of neverending hunger today. LOL

Bee (or anyone) talk me down from going to devour my lunch at 11 am. How am I gonna make it till 1:00pm? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

When I lived in SO, I could walk from George's store to Baird in about five minutes. I think other forces are at play here. Whenever I am in town and whenever I stop by at Ashley's Gourmet guess who I see? Yes, our man George hanging out in the cookie aisle. You know it's true, George. :-D

I'm frantically drinking seltzer. My craving passed.

Do something else to keep busy and drink water!!

Weighed in. Took no time. Staff was great as usual. I especially liked the long hours to make it more accessible to everyone.
