Time for the annual Jewish New Year greetings thread - and as we're ahead of you in time zones, I'll get the honey flowing!
Wishing all MOLers and their families and friends a future of peace, good health, happiness and relief from troubles. Thank you one and all for your continued friendship. May this coming year be the one in which the world finally begins to quieten down, so that peaceful solutions to disagreements can be found.
Shana Tova to all who celebrate, and peace and happiness to all.
As for the year, I don't think its being palindromic has any special significance, but if you glom the two zayin's together and pronounce it as a word, it's kind of like "Huzzah"!
I am not Jewish, but hosting my first Rosh Hashanah dinner tomorrow night. Are there specific prayers and readings I need to track down for the dinner? I have apples & honey & challah, now wondering what part the religious aspect I need to prep...
One other custom is to eat a "new fruit" - something that you haven't had since last season. A common choice is a pomegranate, but people look for any exotic fruit that they don't customarily eat on a regular basis. When you say the 'shehecheyanu' on the second night, you then proceed to eat the new fruit.
Pomegranates are associated with bags of plenty (they're like sacks of seed rubies), and also are associated with fertility and with women. So they're lovely to have at this time of year. Golden sweet fruits and veg are obviously good omens to have, as are round things that remind you of coins and medallions. Avoid spiky shapes and sharp flavours. Rich greens, representing new growth and also money, are good to eat.
