I feel your pain. 

Look for "deep pocket" sheet sets. They are a little longer and deeper at the corners than normal sheet sets and tend to not pop off or ride up.

aren’t they all deep pocket now? Unless your sheets are a decade old, new sets are made to fit up to 18” deep. I haven’t ever had an issue.

My issue is with the top sheet.  They don't seem to be making them as wide as they used to be, so there is nothing to tuck in on the sides.  Perhaps this is related the thicker mattresses, but I think they're also smaller.  

my sheets are quite up to date, I assure you. They fit the mattress, but come off as I sleep - and I'm a pretty laid back sleeper. I barely move.

I find that the size of the top sheets is directly related to the price.  the cheaper sets seem to cut corners wherever they can.   And the worst thing is some dept stores sell the cheaper sets at high prices (usually marked down by at least 50%).  I now read the reviews online first and then buy the brand that seems to be be the best (quality/price).

I try to buy them as separates, and get the top sheet one size up (double for twin, king for queen). Otherwise, I've had the same not-wide-enough issue as the OP.

Who has sheets that are decades old that are viable? I don't know why some of your posts are often so flippant and borderline and hostile. 

In any event, like @drummerboy, my newer ones if not deep pockets, do tend to inch up. It's annoying AF and although I'd love to believe @mikescott, sadly, this has not been the case for me. High or low price the problem still exists if when thread count is very high. And if you have a mattress topper, the pop offs are even worse.

I just bought excellent Fieldcrest sheets for a guest room at Target. The fitted sheet has elastic all the way around, with extra elastic at the corners and had no problems fitting a pillow-top mattress with a topper.

What on earth? “Borderline”, what? Lol  it wasn’t meant to be hostile at all. I have sheets we received from our wedding 14 years ago and they are still in great shape. I have about 4-5 sets so some aren’t heavily rotated. Older sheets are a bit smaller. Newer sheets seem to all be “fits up to 18” (I’ve had the occasion to look at a bunch these past few weeks). I’ve found all those newer sheets to be a good fit.ive never had any slip off and they have elastic all the way around to secure them well. So, I have no experience with sheets not fitting mattresses well.

Anyway, maybe OP has a LESS thick mattress? And that’s why these large new 18”+ sheets slip off? Maybe they are too big?!

No, definitely not too big. Mattress is reasonably thick . It's odd that I had the problem for a while, then it  stopped happening, and now it's started up again.

Maybe it is me and maybe my sleeping is more violent then I thought and my movement pulls them out.

Regardless, my original question stands. They should put some kind of hook  or button like thing on the bottom of the mattress and a matching button-hole like hole in the sheet. problem solved.

While we're at it, how about the folding-the-fitted-sheet dilemma. At least, for me.

Folding the fitted sheets isn't that hard, if you punch out the corners and then smooth them down. Hard to describe, but there are some good videos on YouTube that show different ways of doing it. I also find it helps to fold both ends toward the middle once you have smoothed the sheets out, and then to make a final fold where they meet. That avoids having the thick ends all bunched up together and helps them stack better in the linen closet.

Was thinking about this yesterday. I bought some nice cotton sheets from Lands End (on sale) and almost threw my back out trying to get them on the bed. I don't even have a thick matress. Maybe that is why they were on sale.

You roll them up? When storing them? How do you do this and does it save room? I'm HORRIBLE at folding fitted sheets. Would like another technique.

I usually roll up my clothes as an alternative to folding them when putting them away. Towels too. T-shirts.

For the sheet I don't have any special technique. I do a basic fold first then just kind of roll it up. I mean, I don't care too much about what it looks like as long as it fits in the drawer.

I just checked youtube for "how to fold fitted sheets" and it's kind of hilarious the extent to which people go to have a neatly folded sheet.  It's going in a damn drawer or on a closet shelf ferchrissakes. I mean, life is too short.

I've use daily those things. Be careful, you can put an eye out  if one snaps off while your putting them in. And they don't  always stay on.
