Who to contact for Functional Vision Assessment?

Long complicated story, but MOL knows all oh oh...any referrals for a professional who can do a Functional Vision Evaluation privately?

Thank you!

is this for an adult or child?  I don't have a recommendation but can you get a recommendation from your opthamologist? Many times in large retinologist practices there will be a low vision specialist.

do you need a neuro opthamologist?  I went to one years ago..supposedly a world renowned specialist in NYC...and he was clueless....I eventually got a correct diagnosis from a regular eye doctor--although I can't remember the name any more

it looks like it should be an orientation and mobility specialist that does it...the foundation for the blind should be able to refer you

Having worked for a specialist low vision agency, sometimes it depends on why you need the test. If it's for driving or operating machinery, for example, then you two people: firstly an ophthalmologist who really understands conditions causing low vision and perhaps low vision in ageing, and also an occupational therapist who assess your practical vocational skills and suggest assistive solutions. That might be O&M (mentioned above), or might be via tech or some other way.

Many O &Ms I know are physios and social workers. They're really good at what they do, but their jobs are about adjusting illumination sources, teaching people to move through the environment, use public transport, use echolocation or guide dogs or tech aids for navigation, aids for cooking or grooming. The best O&Ms are orthopitists (work with light) or OTs.  An occupational therapist measures the ergonomics needed for a task such as driving, suggests ways you can perform that task more effectively (modify the vehicle, drive certain hours or routes, use inbuilt vehicle options more effectively etc) and then makes those formal recommendations to the workplace, licensing authority, your doctor etc. the OT changes the environment for you; the O&M changes you for the environment.

George, pls feel free to PM. You may be entitled to this kind of eye health check under Veterans health packages, since vision changes affect around a quarter of the population as we grow out of middle age.

Joanne-Thank you but I'm the "other" Berkeley. This is for a child/so mainly interested in school-related tasks.

perhaps you can try to contact this agency:

I was really helped by Dr. Ira Strenger in Summit (on Deforest). It took about a year for my issues to get resolved. The work was hard but doable. Anyway, his patient population was a mix of stroke survivors, head trauma survivors and a large contingent of youngsters.

He does a very thorough examination of how your eyes function; on their own as well as coordinating with each other.
