Hi, tech people. I’m caught in a quandary. As you might remember, I use an iPad Air 2, currently with iOS v18.7.1. There’s a note on my Updates page asking if I want to update to iOS v26 - do I? I’d rather not deal with AI; what are the benefits of v26? They’re both configured for iPads. It’s an old iPad, at least 10years in my possession. Thanks for your help!
iOS 26 (previously referred to as iOS 19) includes the latest security updates and new features of iOS, including a refreshed user interface (Liquid Glass). Those features are well documented on Apple’s website so I won’t elaborate on all of them.
Your iPad Air 2 doesn’t have the hardware requirements to run Apple Intelligence, so you will get very limited native AI functions from iOS 26. You can, however, download and run apps like Claude, CoPilot and ChatGPT. Siri is still there.
There is always a risk to older iPads that they slow down or struggle with battery life after updates, but since you are running iOS 18 already, you will likely be ok.

I’m so grateful for this advice, thank you. I know I have to upgrade the iPad but first I have to backup what’s on it 🤣
I’m not really into the AI, barely use Siri, Google assistant (Nest?) kept forgetting my voice; we’ve just Alexa but I’m just a voice to her atm. And today the wifi is xxxx slow. But if v19 and v26 are approx the same version, I’m reassured.
