Which Calculator for SAT?

Quick and simple answer please. Nephew taking SAT on Saturday. His mother informs me just now he lost his good calculator "sometime last year". teen has no idea what kind of calculator he had used n the past so that is a useless line of questioning.

I know he needs a scientific calculator- which one would be the simplest to use but do everything he needs it to do? I can't expect him to try it until he's at the test so it has to be easy to use. (bonus points if it doesn't cost me $200 but that part is what it is)

He lives on LI so I need to order it and have his mother pick it up at a Staples or Target or somewhere like that or I can pick up during my workday in the city tomorrow and send it home with a colleague who lives near them.

TIA (and I'll insert some venting words of #$%^, $@*& just to make myself feel better)

regular SAT covers only through Alg II, so whatever he's been using and is comfortable with. At that point, the kids here have been using the TI-86.

He hasn't really been using anything- that's part of the problem. He lost it a while ago. Used "something" in the classroom at school when needed last year. He doesn't have math this year. I was worried the TI-86 would be too complicated if he isn't used to it and mess him all up. Do they need one that advanced or is a basic scientific calculator sufficient?

Actually I think I meant the TI-84. But if he hasn't been using it, you're right, it's complicated and loaded with features he won't use

In Algebra I they use the TI-34 which is much simpler - but I believe can handle exponents, square roots and such (he should probably practice with it if he wants to use those features). It should be able to handle all the operations he'll need.

I've never seen the TI-30 but that might work too. Also, both are much more affordable than the TI-84 and up.

A regular calculator like what we used to balance our checkbooks before smartphones won't have the capacity or acuity he will need for the test

College Board (or whatever they call themselves now), iirc, restricts the types of calculators that can be used. I believe calculators that can be programmed are not permitted. Acceptable models might be posted on the College Board/SAT website??

conandrob, I hope you got the information you needed in time to help out your nephew!

We got him a basic scientific calculator which he said was "fine". The test was "eh". I have no idea what that means but at least he took it and its over. His college ambitions are more 2 year school for now anyway so it was just a formality.

oy, the monosyllabic adolescent....

I'm glad he's looking at continuing in school. The 2-year colleges are a great interim resource for people who haven't quite "gelled" yet, whether in personal terms or in ideas about occupation, in addition to those who just can't afford to go elsewhere....

As always, he's lucky you're paying attention to him!
