Curbside also works.   Market efficiency puts these things in the right hands.

good will said they don't take old fashioned TVs anymore...

I just bought 1 from unique for about $5 (19 inch) so they still take them.  you can also try furniture assist in kenilworth..i think it is near the walmart on 22.

you can post it on freecycle

You can recycle at Best Buy as long as it's no larger than (I think) 42"

@jwitw - Are you sure about that? To my knowledge, they were still taking TVs in November.

unless they changed the policy again...when I was there over the summer, they said they were only taking the LCD/plasma TVS...not the big box...

this says 'tube tvs' are excluded...are TVs from the 90s/early 2000s tube tvs?  i know the sign (in Springfield on 22 said something about none of the bulky old fashioned TVs

+2 for curbside, free sign saying works. This has worked for me.

if you try curbside, just bring it in at night if there are no takers and try again another day...don't leave it for garbage pick up

Probably best to take it to electronics recycling day in Maplewood or South Orange.  There is not really a market for tube TVs anymore, even as donations.

Unique (by Best Buy on 22 and other locations) does a good business selling the old TVs....I went to the Watchung and South Plainfield stores when I was in those areas and they were sold out....and as I said..i just bought a 19 inch...i had a 13 inch and am only replacing it because I can't see it decently!  a lot of people can't afford newer TVs....and will happily take an older style..so there is  market for it.

Funny that I should come across this thread ... We bought mother-in-law and her husband a flat screen for Christmas. I just couldn't bear the thought of watching Thanksgiving football one more year on the that POS tube TV ... I'm going there this morning to install and pull the old one out ... Very long discussion with them at dinner last night about the worthlessness of the old set ... Nonetheless, they insist that I put it in their basement, "in case someone can use it ..." I even offered them $10 for it, so, as I told them, I don't have to move it a second time ...

Rant over.

Merry Christmas.

I can kinda relate to your in-laws' feelings. We've donated two large non-flat-screen TVs to charity, even though both worked fine. Yes, the quality on the newer TVs is clearly far superior, but somehow it seems like such a shame to give away expensive working machines to be replaced by other expensive machines (which, no doubt, will be replaced in years to come). We hope that at least someone else will get good use out of the donated sets.

Side note re your football comment: Years ago, before we had flat screens, my young son came home from a friend's house where he and his buddy had been watching football on his friend's brand-new flat screen. His memorable comment: "You know, Dad, on our set I can barely even read the numbers on the jerseys. My friend's set is so sharp that I can see which players need a shave...."

Saw the Salvation Army truck today and they said they'd take it if I called ahead for an appointment! I hear ya on disgust at this obsolescence. I know there's someone out there who would get some enjoyment out of this set, which was perfectly fine in my book until yesterday when the new one came in.

Please consider donating to vets hospital.  Call the one in East Orange

The "rest of the story" ...

The TV in question literally imploded when I went to remove it from the entertainment center!

The plastic was so brittle that the guts of the TV fell through the bottom when I lifted it ... Cut the crap out of my hand. Shards of plastic everywhere.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Geez. How old was that set?

No idea.

My sense is was the age and that the entertainment center is was in did not allow the air to circulate ...
