Whats the best coffee maker under $100? Including percolators, auto drip, french press etc archived

This is the weekend I take back my coffee. Im going to get a grinder and some great beans. Im going to bring my keurig to work for everyone to use. And I need some sort of coffee brewing maching.

My friend swears by her old percolator. Anyone use one? Tell me what I should get for a really great cup of coffee each morning.
French press by far.
I have a drip you can have if you need something short term or if you have several people over

I do have an old school percolator, one of the classic corning blue ones I found at unique-- never used it but you are free to borrow to see of you like it

I love our Bodum stainless steel french press -- a 4-cup is about $60; a 12-cup is $100. (I broke a few carafes before I went to metal.)

I don't like the floating coffee grounds in the french press though.

This thing makes a fantastic cup of coffee but it is a bit of a pain if you want any quantity.

It is like a french press but it uses a small disk filter and it is done inverted. It is based on the concept of the Clover coffee machine without the $10,000 pricetag.

Boomie - the way to fix that is to get a good burr grinder and make sure to grind the beans on the largest setting (so they're not a fine powder). Then you can use the French press and get great coffee!! We also have a stainless steel Bodum, though ours looks a bit different. Awesome cup of coffee!!

Boomie, you should come see us! We have tons of options under $100, including electric drip the aeropress (which might be a good option), french press, old school percolator, the plastic cones, etc., etc. That said, I personally think the grinder is a more important investment than the maker, if you have to choose one to spend some money on.

I swear by my Capresso. And I make coffee with it, too.

I'm getting both. I will be by this weekend!

have you tried your keurig with one of the reusable coffee filters instead of the regular K-cups? You buy and grind your own beans, but you still make only one cup at a time. I think ours is an EZ cup. not sure though. It has a top that screw on to a plastic cup and you have to remove a piece in the keurig cup holder for it to fit, but it's not bad if you get beans you like. That said, a French Press is going to probably make a much better cup of coffee, but I can never mange that anymore.

I have. I hate it. Its not hot.

Good old fashion farberware electric perc. Love that it makes a hot cup of coffee.

Back in the Dark Ages before I got married I used one of these. I still remember it as making great coffee, although the appearance may have been its big attraction to me.

I second bobk with the Chemex but my DAILY coffee maker is a Melitta like filter.
They come in all sizes and they come in plastic or ceramic. https://shoponline.melitta.com/items/COFFMKRSPROVER
I brew mine into a tall thermal mug and sip on it all morning.

Wow all this coffee paraphernalia is blowing my mind. Its like a coffee head shop up in this biznatch.

You've been spoiled by that Able Baker coffee!

I would suggest buying a used semi-automatic espresso machine off craigslist, especially since you're already going to buy a grinder. A used Gaggia Classic can be bought for less that $100 and will completely transform your mornings. Amazing latte's and cappuccino's in less that 3 minutes. I swear, you'll wonder why you ever wasted your time and money on a drip coffee machine.

But I just want coffee really, not lattes and cappucinos?

Another vote for the French Press. Bodem makes insulated ones that keep the coffee a bit hotter.

For espresso on a budget, you cannot beat a Moka.

Chemex blows away our French Press.

Again, this is a matter of taste. I have a Cuisinart drip maker which uses Melitta-style filters. It doesn't make "gourmet" coffee but I like the convenience. I use paper filters, and I toss the wet grinds plus paper into the compost. If you're concerned about reducing waste, you can get one of those gold porous filters, but you have to wash them every time, and you have to be sure not to put fine grounds down the sink. Apparently, course grounds are either benign or beneficial for your plumbing. But you didn't hear that from me.

But yeah, Ben will set you straight. He'll figure out what's best for YOU.

In college, I had one of those stovetop espresso makers. My coffee always tasted like metal. What was I doing wrong? I lived in Manhattan, where the water is good.

That chemex thing is so pretty. It really makes good coffee?

My sister, who roasts her own beans, swears by a stovetop glass vacuum pot, but it terrifies me.

I have a "baby" Chemex! I will post photo momentarily...

It is sooooooo good. Can't believe how good. And we are big coffee snobs. It doesn't stay hot, so we only use it when we are ok with that.

So you make it when you're ready to drink it immediately.

Right. And when we have time to warm it up. On mornings we just need the fuel, we set the timer on the Krupps.

Here is my joy when first purchased!
