What was happening at CHS this morning?

I drove my son to school this morning and there was a lot of police activity in front of the school at around 815 with the block closed off by police cars and officers near the ground at the crosswalk in front of Kensington.  From a distance it looked like someone may have been hurt.  Anyone know what was going on?

No - students were going into school and there were many police cars but no fire trucks (yet)

I wondered this as well. I had a moment of panic because my husband had driven my kids down that way around that time, but I couldn't see what was going on otherwise.

I saw ambulances and emergency vehicles around 8:40, with Parker closed all the way up to Prospect.

Very, very unfortunately a female student was hit by a car. I understand that she was conscious, but in pain. Don't know any other details.

I was afraid it might have been a student hit by a car by what I was seeing.  Thanks for confirming.  Will send out hopes for healing.

she was on a bicycle. she was sitting up and talking, but in pain. hoping she is okay.

Oh, I'm sorry to hear that =(  Best wishes for a full recovery!

Oh no! Sending prayers. Hope to God she is okay.

Where was the police officer that's always there directing traffic?

The police office that directs traffic and crosses the students is at North Terrace and this accident was at Kensington

I guess they need more than one officer.  There's a lot of traffic and jaywalkers in that area (including cars stopped under the "no stopping or standing" signs) and one officer can't have eyes in all directions.  Hope she's OK.

That's scary. Poor thing.

Apparently a Teacher at CHS hit a girl on a bike in front of the school.  Maplewood PD was all over and stopped & diverted traffic.  Lot's of moving parts around that time and they do a great job.. this appears to be a very low speed accident.   Not sure who's art fault as I saw all this take place from afar

Via email this afternoon:

Good afternoon, Columbia community.  As you may have heard from  your student this morning, one of our students was injured in an accident while riding her bike to school. Our school administrators, teachers, nurses, security staff, and Maplewood Police and Fire managed the scene smoothly and the student received immediate attention.    We do take this very important opportunity to remind you that Parker and Valley Streets, Kensington Terrace, Academy Street, and North Terrace are very busy both at the 7:20 and 8:15 drop offs. Please use all care while driving, and please impress upon your students the importance of being aware of their surroundings.    The need for adult and teen drivers, walkers, skateboarders, and bikers to remember the role that  helmets, paying attention to cars and crosswalks, using the good sense to not look at a phone or iPod screen while crossing streets, and being aware of the state law for drivers to stop for pedestrians in cross walks are steps we should all be taking to make sure all of our students are safe coming to and from school.    Please also remember that we ask that you NOT enter into our parking lots to drop off students. Please drop them safely along the curb.   The intersection of North/Academy and Parker have a police presence in the mornings. The intersection of Valley and Parker has a crossing guard.    Thank you for remembering these things and working with us to keep us all safe.    Best regards,  Elizabeth Aaron

Hopefully they will ticket the living hell out of the folks dropping off under the no stopping/standing signs in front of CHS now.  Ridiculous the flagrant abuse there every morning.

Does anyone know how the young person hit by the car is doing?

My child has told me she has a broken leg, and was very lucky to have been wearing a helmet.

Thanks for the update.  I hope she heals quickly.  That broken leg will keep her off her bike for quite some time.  Hopefully, she has another way of getting to/from school in the interim.

Re 'lucky to be wearing a helmet', I would add 'SMART to be wearing a helmet'.

People drive down Academy like it's an interstate freeway, and I am sure they do it on the other surrounding streets, too. I am not surprised there was an accident. I am surprised there haven't been more...

It's a clusterfluk down there every morning. Lots of entitlement on display. And the intersection at Parker and Valley doesn't help. I'm sorry to hear this young woman was hurt. And I agree, I'm surprised there aren't more accidents.

For the record the girl on the bike HIT the teachers car, not the other way around.

I'm confused by this article. It says she was traveling West on Parker and "failed to stop" at Kensington. Is there a stop sign there? If nobody was in the crosswalk, wouldn't she have the right of way? There must be a better explanation?

The next paragraph in the story says:  “She never stopped…[and] went right across Parker and hit the front wheel of the car,” a silver Saturn, Black said."

Yes, it is confusing.  The only clear statement is that she hit the car.

I was killing a couple of minutes before I start dinner and clicked on the Maplewoodian web-site which quotes the Maplewood Police Report:

"The vehicle was traveling West on Parker Ave and it appears the 16 year old female bicyclist was traveling North on Kensington Ter and did not stop.

The bicycle/bicyclist collided with the front 1/4 panel of the vehicle."
