What's the deal with Manny's Weiners?

Every now and then, I like a good wiener. Is this the place to go? It looks kind of weird from the outside. Like it's full of bikers with guns.

I do like the fact that Texas is part of the name. The Dallas Cowboys are from Texas.

But if they have some good wieners in there, count me in.

Also, it's located across the street from Home Depot. Why?

Manny's was there first.  Why is the Home Depot across from Manny's?

Mannys is fine as a diner.  Nothing too fancy but good and not overpriced.  Owned I think by the brother of Maria, who owns Chris's downtown in South Orange.

Yep, Manny's was there way back when it was the Union Market. And don't let the outside scare you, it looks much nicer on the inside. The clientele is a mix of middle class and working class, so whatever your personal circumstances you probably won't feel uncomfortable eating there. While I'm sure Manny wouldn't turn away bikers, it is actually the type of place where they hang up the drawings that the kids make while waiting for their food.

The weird thing about these Jersey "Texas Weiner" joints is that hot dogs are not really a thing in Texas.  When an expat goes back to Texas no one says "I can't wait to eat a hot dog when I go home."

What exactly is a Texas Wiener?

I read somewhere that the term Texas Weiner is a thing from the 40's.

I'm also from Texas. There's no such food as a Texas Weiner.

sausages, particularly the German sausages in the Hill Country are a thing.

That's definitely true. Maybe that's the origin of Texas weiners?

it's a good place.

I go to MTW often.   Never seen a biker   Never seen anyone scary!

I'm not a connoisseur, but I was impressed with the weiners at Stoney's in South Orange.

Bikers? We usually encounter cops when we go there. It is basically a diner. The food is good and affordable and the waitresses are very nice. We like Manny's Texas Weiners!

I am from Texas too, and Manny's is the only place in this state that I can find a "chili dog" a true Texas thing! I don't go there often, and can't remember if it is actually on the menu,as such, but I might have ordered a hot dog with a little side dish of chili and just put the chili on the hot dog.

ETA..never heard of Texas Weiners when I lived in Texas either.

I never heard of Texas Weiners until I moved to New Jersey (from Texas.)  Interestingly, the only hot dog place I ever heard of there was called "James Coney Island".

I'm a biker (sans gun) and I've always been tempted to stop in. Now I know why!

After a bit of googling, a Texas Weiner is apparently a New Jersey nickname for a chili dog. The guess is that the Texas part was added because Texas was known for their chili.

As far as there not being a hot dog known as a Texas Weiner in Texas, you should also remember that French fries did not originate in France.

ETA: And apparently it dates back to the 20's, not the 40's as I said above.

I dont know if this is the definitive description of a Texas Weiner or not.

I'm there pretty regular, but as far as the weiners I think they are not nearly the best you will find.  Also the chili is just weird.  On the whole though it is a good place that does a lot of business.

And I didn't mean to disparage bikers!

Totally off topic, but didn't I hear that you're moving? Hope you'll still stop by MOL.

I'm glad y'all have addressed my smoldering questions.

I'm also from Texas and had been idly puzzling over the Texas wiener thing for years. Used to think maybe it had something to do with corny dogs... but no. BBQ, a la Dickey's, perhaps? Nope.

Just a diner.

Guys, the overuse of the word weiner is making me uncomfortable.

In Texas, we called them HOT DOGS!

Everything's bigger in Texas.

Their chili is actually the closest thing in the area to Nick Tahou's "Hot Sauce" (the stuff they put on their famous Garbage Plate - A Rochester NY Favorite).
