What printer should I get?

My HP 6700 apparently has bitten the dust. I'm getting a non-specific error about an ink system problem, and the only suggestion is to power off and if it recurs, contact HP.

Naturally, it recurred. I'm not going to contact HP.

I'm poking around on youtube for possible solutions, but it looks like I'll have to buy a new one.

I usually get HP printers, because way back in time, HP used to build printers like battleships that lasted forever. And I can't shake that fond memory to realize that HP quality is clearly not what it once was.

So, is there any brand that's a favorite out there?  Or is it just a commodity and are they all the same?

Based on the overwhelming response to this thread, I'll be getting an Epson.

Thanks everyone. oh oh

Epson WorkForce WF-3640 was recommended to me by my "computer guy", Steve Brier.  Local Maplewood resident - Brier IT, MOL sponsor.  I used to always have HP printers as well.  Epson has excellent reviews and so far I'm happy with it.

I ended up getting a work force printer too, the WF-2760. Delivery tomorrow.

I know they make money off the ink, but I'm still amazed that you can buy a FAX/Copier/Printer for 69 bucks. With duplex printing no less. I remember when we got our first duplex laser at work. It was like the size of a Volkswagen beetle (or so I remember)

Printers are cheap b/c the cartridges cost so d*mn much. That's what you need to research not the printer itself. Most are fine.

Let us know how it works for you.

I'm extremely down on HP and most of its products, but I still think they make some excellent printers.

Bought an Epson Ecotank ET2550 about a year ago.  It's got color, wi-fi and a scanner (but no fax).  Instead of ink cartridges it comes with bottles of ink (red, yellow, blue, black).  Each bottle is good for about 4,000 pages.  Needless to say we're still on the first set of bottles.  Print quality is ok, software works well on windows.  I'm very happy with the choice.

I used to refill my own cartridges. Now I get them refilled at Costco for a reasonable cost.

Yeah, I'm not crazy about HP, though I just bought an HP laptop. Go figure.

For awhile my main desktop PC's were refurbed HP's. They did ok. Got an Acer as my main machine now.

I've been happy with both Epson and Canon over the years, but as another poster suggested, it's the ink use that's a killer.

To be fair to HP, or any other printer maker, my HP 6700 is the first printer of mine in a long time to actually bite the dust. Not that I overwork them. These days, I mostly just print recipes. I have a laser printer for printing things like tax returns and other more voluminous documents.

And I still have a full set of cartridges for the damn thing!

Anyone need any HP 933XL and 932XL cartridges?
