What is your favorite furniture store?

I desperately need furniture. I seem to like what I see online, but not in person. My husband doesn't want to buy furniture on line. He wants to be able to see it, touch it and sit on it first. Where do you buy furniture? Also - if you had a great experience buying furniture online - maybe my husband would consider buying online if someone was pleased with the quality of the furniture online.

What kind of stuff do you like online? Probably need to give a sense of your style to get recommendations.

Yes...as far as I can tell Berkshire represents the solid middle lines of furniture. But it is the classic showroom experience -- you look at the examples of a given line that they have in-store, get sense of quality and construction, and then look at the catalogues to see the much wider range available. If you are looking at upholstered goods, you choose from hundreds of fabrics, and perhaps borrow a sample to look at in your home.

My father-in-law sold furniture this way for decades...it is how it was done before the market shifted to Ikea (at the low end), and places like Pottery Barn that offer fewer options. If you find a store whose lines and price point you like, it is easier to take the leap of faith on the catalog if you like pieces that aren't on the floor.

Interestingly, I priced out the bunk beds we ordered at a couple of online vendors, just to see how much I was paying for my customer service and in-home delivery, and realized that the prices at Berkshire were actually a bit better than what I saw online (and they listened to us and helped us find the right catalog for exactly what we were looking for).

Beds haven't arrived yet, so I can't give a full review.

Good luck!

We have bought in the past from Raymour & Flanigan, Pottery Barn, Crate & Barrel, and Ethan Allen. I would say the only store I was not at all happy with was Raymour & Flanigan, because the furniture turned out to be quite cheaply made, based on our experience with a chaise and a chair over the past two years. The pieces we have from the other stores are holding up quite well. Oh, we also bought from Thomasville, at a store on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn between Brooklyn Heights and Cobble Hill. Those pieces held up extremely well, despite being nearly two decades old.

I like room and board in NYC, they deliver and setup the furniture for $99

I bought my living room furniture from this NC based store 10-years ago when I was living in Chicago. They carry many brands. If you give them the style number, they will give you a quote. At the time, none of my local furniture stores could come anywhere close to matching their price.

I bought our couch recently from Suburban Furniture in Denville and was pleased with their selection and service

As do I. Have you checked out West Elm (Rt 17) and Room and Board (SoHo)?

We have several West Elm pieces, including a desk just purchased a few days ago. Their stuff is really beautiful, although not the greatest quality. We have our WE pieces in a living room, so we're not opening drawers everyday. I'm not sure I'd trust their stuff in a bedroom where you're opening and closing drawers many times a day.

We have a couple sectionals from Room and Board that we love. As soon as the kids stop destroying stuff I'd like to get some wooden pieces from Room and Board. The showroom in SoHo is gigantic. Worth a trip of you like their stuff.

Agree with PeggyC on Raymour & Flanigan- very poor quality. The Macy's store on Rte 22 has a good selection and is fair to good quality. We have also shopped at Crate and Barrel, West Elm and Restoratiin Hardware and I have loved all the pieces I bought there. If you like Restoratiin Hardwaree, wait for a 20% off sale or $100 off every $500- they run those sales often
