Joy is correct. It is a heron. Unfortunately it or one of its kind has been visiting our pond
It was too big to be a black capped night heron, it was pretty large. Someone else thinks it was a great blue heron.
Here's a photo from further away but with a tree for scale. Whatever it was I hadn't seen on at the pond before, it was pretty cool.
Their wing span is really big.
ETA - they need space to get aloft. I chase them away from our pond.
Definitely a great blue heron. They are actually pretty common around her in lakes and streams.
It's a great blue heron. I wonder why s/he's still hanging around here. I would think it'd be too cold here now. I hope it makes it through the winter.

Not a pet obviously but I'm not sure what category to put this in. We saw this bird in South Orange yesterday, looks like a heron maybe? It was quite large. Picture isn't great, sorry. It was standing very still.
