We want a dog! UPDATE: and now we have one!

After getting lots of advice from people experienced with puppy-mill dogs, we've decided to adopt a dog in the hope of bringing our puppy-mill rescue dog, Stella, out of her shell a bit and perhaps even helping her to enjoy life. (The dog will also be a companion for us, of course.) We've been approved to adopt from Eleventh Hour Rescue, but none of the dogs they have right now are quite right for us. We have some criteria that are going to make it a little bit challenging to find the right dog, but I thought I'd throw the question out here in case anyone knows or hears of a dog who might fit the bill.

Stella loves other dogs--they're the one creature always guaranteed to elicit a positive response from her. But she's got short legs and isn't much of a runner, and she tends to shut down when overstimulated, so boisterous, high-energy young dogs won't work. We're mostly looking at dogs age 4-7. For that matter, we're not tremendously high-energy people ourselves, though I love to walk and am looking forward to having a dog who enjoys walking with me. But a larger dog or one who needs tons of exercise or a high-energy household probably wouldn't be happy with us. And then there's the big limitation, or rather four furry little limitations: we have four cats, all of whom are dog-friendly (or more accurately, dog-indifferent), so we absolutely have to have a dog who is okay with cats.

For various reasons, we don't want a beagle or a pit bull, and I'm not the biggest fan of yippy little terrier-type dogs (pugs, dachshunds, and other small dogs are fine, though), but other than that, we're open to any breed or mixture.

We'll continue to wait for a suitable dog to come in at Eleventh Hour, and I'm trying to get in touch with some breed rescues too, but in the meantime, if you know someone who needs to rehome a dog, we'd love to hear about it! Thanks.

  • Hi !!

I have a friend who is looking to relocate her dog.

The dogs name is Luna and she is the sweetest and friendliest dog you will ever meet. She gets along with cats, other dogs and love kids.

I attach a picture of the dog- she is the perfect dog and I hope she finds a great family ... She deserves it! She was adopted from JAC

How about a retired greyhound?

Thanks, HarleyQuinn! I saw the post about Luna the other day but thought she must have already found a home, since it was past the family's moving date. Luna sounds like she could be just right for us--how can I get in touch with your friend?

A cat-tested retired greyhound would be perfect, but I'm not aware of any local/semi-local rescue groups. If you (or anyone) knows of one, please let me know! Thanks.

Unfortunately Luna hasn't found a home yet, my friend is moving this weekend. Luna is still with her. I will PM and give you all the information you need.

Trust me you adopt Luna you will not regret it. She deserves the best - a wonderful dog.

Thank you!

The most important thing will be how the two dogs get along. I'm not sure how that could be evaluated prior to adoption, but I'm sure others on the board have ideas, maybe Calliope?

Regarding rescued greyhounds, try messaging Tom Reingold. He and his Lovely Wife have adopted at least two greyhounds over the years and can probably give you some valuable information and contacts.

Oh God, me too

Yes! Just posted on the other thread. I was thinking of this match

We're tentatively set to meet Luna tomorrow. All fingers and paws in our household are crossed. grin

Greyhounds need less exercise than other breeds. When they race, they go fast, but they don't go for long. They don't have stamina. And ours learned to walk slowly just fine. I can't run, so I never ran Red (RIP), and I don't run Waffle. Waffle is now old and slow anyway.

There are two greyhound rescue groups in NJ. There is GAP (greyhound adoption program) and Greyhound Friends of New Jersey. We got one from each. Our experience with GAP was slightly nicer.

Mem has also adopted retired greyhounds. If the meet with Luna does not work out, and I hope it does, you might try sending her a PM as well.

Good luck with the meeting with Luna!!!

I have a very mellow 11 year-old cocker spaniel available for adoption thru Abandoned Angels Cocker Spaniel Rescue.

He ignores our cats and enjoys the company of my female dogs. I am sure he
would enjoy hanging out with our male dog if our dog didn't growl at
him all the time.

I would be comfortable placing this dog with kids, or even older people as well as with friendly dogs and cats. He has been a pretty easy foster. He will need to have drops for his eyes as he has dry eye. He sits still and allows this without complaint.

He's very vibrant and healthy, but cannot see so well (that doesn't hinder
him) and he is so easy to walk on leash. Potty trained, crate trained
and a little bit silly--his name is Mr. Wonderful.

OK, the name Mr. Wonderful is fantastic. oh oh

Thanks, all. Tom, I'll try both greyhound rescues if things don't work out with Luna.

Jeanneh, I think 11 is a little older than we want to go, but not out of the question, and Mr Wonderful is a cutie. I'll keep him in mnd if we don't adopt Luna.

Curly tail pug rescue!! They're great.

Stella, Luna! I hope it's meant to be grin

good catch!

On another note, we have had two Greys, and the first was from Greyhound Friends of NJ.Sounds like it would be a perfect fit: friendly but mellow, and not at all yippie

Stellaluna is actually Stella's full name, though we never useit. I'm sure she's willing to share the Luna part.

Coincidence? Maybe not. Let us know how the meet-and-greet goes, please?

Luna has found her new home. rolleyes She's currently settling in and flirting with the cats. Stella is confused but interested.

HarleyQuinn, I can't thank you enough for helping to make this happen. Luna seems like she's going to fit right in, andwe love her already.

What a happy ending!!!!

Awwwwwww, what wonderful news for both families!!! I'm so pleased for you, and for Luna. I'm sure Luna's previous family will miss her, but this is a really good ending. snake
