Ways to keep your data from ISPs

So, now that the Republicans have decreed that everyone's search history shall be for sale to the highest bidder I am becoming increasingly interested in ways to maintain my privacy. What do people suggest? Does anyone have experience with encrypted browsers like TOR? What other actions can be taken without undue effort to make the telecommunication industry's recent victory a pyrrhic one?

I recently started using IPVanish, a paid VPN service which encrypts and anonymizes my traffic. I think it's $10/month, and I'm not sure I want to pay that much for it. There is a speed penalty, so I wouldn't stream video over it.

A VPN is probably a better solution than Tor at the moment for most people. Using Tor properly is still kind of geeky. The VPN solution is much more straightforward, quite effective, and pretty cheap.

You should look into Private Internet Access. $40 (I think) a year for 5 device support, and I stream video over the connection all the time with no issues.

FWIW, StackSocial has a sale on a two-year subscription to Private Internet Access right now. I'm also looking at NordVPN, which I'm told is one of the best. Here's a good comparison chart for a ton of VPN providers.

You can stop ISPs from selling your data by paying a VPN to sell your data - or just selling your browsing history back to the ISP you use.

I'm not sure I'd put a lot of trust in companies that are designed around an industry (VPN) that most customers use for piracy, getting around licensing agreements and bypassing government restrictions. While they all start with someone wanting to help people fight 'the man', at the end of the day they're all businesses with a bottom line.
