Wanted: Syrian tenants

I have a 1/1 condo that I rent out, and my current tenants are moving at the end of the month. Anyone know of an agency that can put me in touch with a Syrian refugee family? Serious question.

Good for you. Shame on our governor.

I will. And then we'll invite Christie over for dinner.

Thank, annesimms. I'll make some calls tomorrow.

I rented to several Iraqi refugee families over the course of several years . Great tenants, and they fed me like a king.

International Rescue Committee

you could try the IRC:

http://www.rescue.org/welcome-irc-new-york-and-new-jersey

I have a contact at the NY/NJ  resettlement office if you need help.

You are great. As TigerLilly said above, if it works out, please let us know how we can help.

I agree, this is great. And yes, let us know...

It would be great if whatever family you found also included a few under five year old orphans..Maybe the family had taken in some children of departed relatives. ..

If you do this let me know too.  I would like to try to get my church involved.

look into the International Rescue Committee http://m.rescue.org

I emailed the IRC last night. Will keep everyone posted.

I am also willing to help. Just let me know what you need if you indeed get a family. Thanks for doing such a great thing!

Maybe contact World Church Service?

Yay! A nice, caring, thoughtful thread about international crises! Good for you guys... snake

Would also love to help. Good for you @kthnry!

I'm in to help with food, clothing, whatever.  Bring 'em in.

I think it's great to help out "vetted" refugees.  That said, I understand why Governors are not willing to accept Syrian refugees at this time.  I think the minority have now created a huge problem for those who really need it.

Given that this thread isn't in the politics section, the debate over how some governors can be xenophobic, myopic asses should really be taken there, not here.

It's completely inappropriate to make such decisions on a state-by-state basis.  We don't have closed state borders.  If refugees settle in New York, do you think they cannot then travel to NJ, even though our Governor has made it clear they are not welcome?  It's political posturing by the governors - pandering to peoples fear and worst instincts.  It's not helpful or responsible.

If they have responsible and thoughtful suggestions, then they are welcome to contribute in a meaningful way.  Otherwise, they're just contributing to the problem.

This thread is very heart warming. Bring 'em in.

Morrow church is putting together a committee to explore welcoming a Syrian Refugee family.   Contact Brad Motta, the pastor there.  Maybe Morrow could support you in this effort.   973-763-7676

I will be happy to drive anyone to the grocery store, drug store, doctor etc.   I remember my mom doing this in Texas for some young (pregnant) women less well off than we were.

It made a huge impression on me.  I will bring my teen along for the ride this time as well.

What sort of power do these governors imagine they have over the acceptance of refugees?

Thanks, I will call him. No word from the IRC so far.

They can refuse to take money from the federal government.

"Here's some money for food and housing for some deserving people."

"No thanks. We're all bigots here."

You could try the US Administration for Children and Families which is a Division of the Dept of Health and Human Services.  They have regional offices with one in NY/NJ - info on the website.  The Director of Refugee Resettlement in Washington is Bob Carey who lives in South Orange.

It's possible this department is doing more regarding policies, but they might be able to connect you to the right group.

Most VOLAGS (agencies that resettle refugees) are terribly disorganized and have a high staff turnover.  Goggle VOLAGS and it will give you a list in NJ.  There are only maybe three in N NJ.
