Want a Lobster Dinner

Birhday coming up this week  . Would love to have what I used to call a " shore "dinner, shrimp cocktail, clam chowder, broiled lobster  Hubby does not like seafood  Wherecan we go that is close to SoMa, and not to expensive  ?  His idea is Red Lobster  Please is there something better?

Agreed, Iron Bound has a couple of options for seafood, but Fornos is good.

I love the two stuffed lobster meal at Iberia but it doesn't sound like the clambake type thing she was looking for. I honestly don't know anywhere like that around. Marinos in Cranford has good chowder, amazing clams oreganato and really good fried fish, shrimp & scallops but I've never seen whole lobster served there.

There's a Bonefish Grill a ways down route 22 (southbound). We liked it and it could be an alternative to Red Lobster. Does Legal Seafood have the type meal in question? It's been a while since I was there.

bonefish doesn't anything like it. Legal seafood might- they have traditional chowder for sure

Spanish Tavern has a place on 22.

Or go to McCloones in Long Branch.  Overpriced but might be what you are looking for.

Ricalton's just started offering $25 lobster dinner special -- 1.5 lb lobster, ear of corn, baked potato, and glass of wine.  But, it's unclear when it's available.

Based on website's (disappearing) promo and promo on TAP into SOMA (https://www.tapinto.net/towns/soma/events/lobstah-night-at-ricaltons-village-tavern-2) tried it Saturday evening.  Lobster was offered steamed or broiled, and was excellent.  Potato and wine were good, though corn was over-cooked.

That said, service experience was a bit bizarre, and somewhat reminiscent of Abbott and Costello's "Who's on First?" routine.

No mention of the special on/with menu, table, or anywhere visible.  After double-checking website, which we noticed other diners were doing after leafing through menu, we hesitantly ordered the lobster dinner special -- after waiting 15 minutes for our waitress to re-appear.

- Customer:  We'll share a salad to start and have two lobster dinner specials.

- 1st Waitress:  We have lobster bisque and lobster rolls.

- Customer:  What about the special dinner advertised on your website and elsewhere?

- 1st Waitress:  I don't know anything about it, but I've been away.

- Customer:  Can you look into it for us?

- 1st Waitress:  OK.

- 1st Waitress:  Protracted disappearance...

- 2nd Waitress:  Are you being helped?

- Customer:  Our waitress didn't know about the lobster special, and was looking into it for us.  Is there a lobster special tonight?

- 2nd Waitress:  Sure (and points to nearby couple enjoying their lobster).  You can have it steamed or broiled, with corn and potato -- no substitutions.

- Customer:  Great, can you try to find our waitress and let her know.  Also, let her know we'd like one steamed and one broiled, along with two glasses of the white wine that comes with the special.

- 2nd Waitress:  I don't know anything about wine being included with the dinner.

- Customer:  Can you look into it for us?

- 2nd Waitress:  OK.

Wait, wait, wait....

- 1st Waitress:  Sorry about the delay; we're understaffed.  We DO have a fish special.  I understand you want one steamed and one broiled lobster.  What kind of wine would you like?

Unless Ricalton's decides to share its secret lobster promotion with all of its customers and employees, you may have to work a bit to enjoy it.  I'd also to confirm it's still available.

St James Gate also has a lobster dinner on their summer menu.

My feeling is to only order lobsters from places that have it on their menu regularly.  I don't see it as the type of item you can have on as a hidden special.  Who knows how long those lobsters have been sitting in a tank.  Ricaltons has been hit or miss from day one for both food and service.

Shop Rite will steam lobster for you.   I recently made lobster rolls with Shop Rite streamed lobster and made a picnic at the out door stage in Convent Station and it was such a lovely evening. The non seafood part of our party had deli sandwiches which they loved. We had wine in glasses and felt like a very high end evening.  (Thinking outside the box)  This years out door stage is a great comedy The Complet Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)

Happy Birthday!

I'm now dizzy.

The only places I know of that fit the bill (and will get hubby something he'd like) are expensive... usually a good steakhouse like Roots fits that bill quite easily (shrimp cocktail, chowdah/bisque, lobster) but it won't come cheap.

Go to Shoprite and buy a lobster but don't have them cook it. Buy corn on the cob and an Idaho potato while you're there.

Buy a bottle of white wine at your favorite store.

Take the above to Ricalton's and tell them that you want the lobster special. Use Hubby's South Orange Senior Discount Card.

Happy Birthday!

I've heard Spanish Tavern is good for lobster, but I have not been and don't care for lobster.

Well said. Secret lobster sounds like future gastrointestinal discomfort. Much like oysters and sushi, you want a place where the line is moving and and they are serving quantity to patrons.

Pub 199 in Mt Arlington, 1/2 hour away on route 80.  Not quite what you want, but 2 dozen steamed clams, steamed lobster and baked potato $23.  I'm in Maine all the time and a critic about overpriced tough restaurant lobster here and this was not bad.

I would always choose Iberia or Fornos, or some other Ironbound restaurant for lobster.  The seafood is always great, the service is always impeccable, and, for the non-seafood eaters they have a selection of great meat options.

Oh boy Pub 199 !!!  I have been there a few times and the seafood is great !

Not close but...get in the car and come here!!!! We have a guest room waiting!!

Ooh Just drove through Livingston.

Maybe Nero's they have the lobster and potato and wine maybe not corn. I have to been for forever but they have survived for a long tine they must do the basis well.

Meyersville Inn, about 25 minutes away.    Extensive seafood specials on the current menu including lobster tails, chowders, lots of shellfish.    Had a beer and steamers there a few weeks back and it was pretty good.  Not fancy, but decent food and a nice bartender.

Don't Forget Verjus! Jane & Charlie are offering their $45 Shore Dinner this Friday:

http://www.verjusrestaurant.com/menus/fridaymenu.pdf

Drinks are extra...

-s.

I think the Verjus Shore Dinner was only last Friday (July 8). This week is Bistro Week according to the email I got from Verjus yesterday, and that menu doesn't have lobster on it. They rotate special Friday menus, though, so the Shore Dinner should be returning in 3 or 4 weeks.

You're right! Never mind...

BTW: Felicitations, Nancy!

Just go to Pt Pleasant -- on the boardwalk - Martells' tiki bar and lobster house.  Has everything you want and it is fun to go there.  Get there around 6 and stay till after sunset.  Food is good, and takes  about an hour to get there.
