USPS scrooges!!! Returned holiday cards LOL archived

Dec 19, 2011 at 3:59am
I mean really?! I sent out 75(ish) holidays cards. They were square and lightweight. I sent them everywhere. And three get returned for insufficient postage? Scrooges!! And worse yet, they marked out the stamps so I had to start from scratch.

oy vey...
My daughter mailed her cards last Monday - still don't have mine. I wonder if she's getting them back...

Square envelopes cost more to mail.

I don't know if you've read about it - but the USPS is running short on cash.

Darn. About half of the cards I mailed today were square. Hope they sneak through.

Had a similar problem two years ago. We had picked up a bunch of "Happy Christmas" cards when we vacationed in London that summer (Harrod's has a year-round Christmas shop for us tourists). Mailed them all out - but they were square. I learned that square costs more - I have no idea why.

It's something to do with the machine that sorts by zip code - they were designed for rectangular envelopes.

Well, you should look at it the other way- you probably got most of your cards through without paying enough postage. Merry Christmas.

I was told they were okay and within weight limit.

Perhaps the USPS is running low on cash because they have no idea how to run a business?

3 came back out of 75. I don't feel like I "skated". I'm well aware how postage works and I specifically check my cards each year. This is not my first rodeo.

Annoying!!!

Who told you that?

On that, you're right - if the postage was insufficient they should have returned all 75.

I mailed two places...both in SO. SO Post office said they were fine.

So the postage was not insufficient. Get it?

How much postage was on each envelope?

a regular stamp. I was told they did not need add'l postage. They met shape and weight parameters. Hmmm....

If it's square, it's 60something cents.

Again, not what I was told AT THE POST OFFICE.

I think they need some work...

I'm having trouble seeing who the scrooge is in this scenario.

You're saying the person at the Post Office intentionally gave you the wrong information so your Christmas cards wouldn't be delivered?

Most square envelopes have a note printed on them indicating that extra postage is required. It seems like yours did not and the post office worker didn't notice the shape. But at least only 3 have come back to you. Silver lining!!

No, I'm saying someone was a scrooge and made the decision to return three of them. Maybe they were in a bad mood? Having a crappy day? And then they crossed out the stamp. Why?? I mean if they had insufficient postage, they would have ALL (or most) been returned, no?

Ugh! Can you check and see if a rep sample of the others were received? I would wonder about those in limbo if it were me. Stinks!

When did you mail them? Not to be a downer, but is it possible that more will come back in the next few days?

Mail is sorted by machine. The machines depend on the shape of the envelope to line up the scanner. The machine can't tell which way is up on a square envelope. It's unlikely the machine was in a bad mood.

They were mailed in two sets. I know most people have received because many have either called/emailed me to tell me they love the card. It is quite possible more could come back I guess. It's just so annoying. Some arse marked out the stamps with a pen. Sorry, but last time I checked, machines don't do that.

No, the machine spits it out for a person to place back in the machine with the stamp at the upper right corner. Half of them probably sailed right through by chance. The guy who rearranges the envelopes probably got sick of turning them right side up and went all "scrooge" on you by doing his job.

Every piece of mail I've ever had returned had the stamp marked so it couldn't be reused.

Is there a reason you are acting like an arse?

I've had very few returned in my life. It happens once and you pay attention going forward. I don't think it's ever been marked out. Again, so weird to have this happen when I was given the "all clear". This was the first time I did SO too. I'm usually a Vauxhall girl.

Is there a reason you can't just admit you made a mistake and move on? I find it pretty hard to believe you've gone your whole life without hearing that square envelopes cost more to mail. You forgot. No biggie. Certainly no reason to call some guy on the night shift a scrooge.

I think Rob's scenario (snark possibly excepted) is very likely.

I think the person at the SO post office gave you bad info about the postage. And its not like the post office front desk people speak with those at the sorting facilities.

Rob, you read my posts, right? You see that I asked at the SO Post Office and was told they were fine? I asked the question. I didn't forget. But again, thanks for your nasty comments. LOL Happy Holidays!!

the entire US Postal system is a waste of money. 99% of our mail is junk, I think the only people who use regular mail is folks over 70 and Netflix.

Could be Rastro. Just stinks it had to happen.
