Username to real name requests

Bikefixed is now PeterWick!

I will not changed from one username to another - but if people want to make a real name upgrade - I will allow this, but at the same time - I will announce the change in this thread.  I also need to have some knowledge of who the real person is in order to do this.   blank stare

There is still a possibility of creating an all real name community.  At the present, it's tricky integrating it here - at present it would need to be a separate community.

If you can change my FilmCarp to DanDietrich I'd appreciate it.  I tried once a few years ago.  Thanks.

Me! karenmarlowe would be great. With or without caps.

The thing is - we're all going to miss your usernames.  :-(

These have been updated - KarenMarlowe - I don't think username is case sensitive.

Welcome Peter, Dan, and Karen.

I loved my username, and it was a nod to Mar A Lago, and Marjorie Merriweather Post. I used it when I had AOL. I read Palm Beach Babylon and needed a username. maralago was taken, so I settled for marylago (which means sea and lake as opposed to the original sea to lake). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Just want to say Hi and welcome to my friends and distant neighbours that I’ve known under different names for so long  wink

Jamie, thanks for this thread.  snake question

FilmCarp comes from my career as a carpenter in the film industry.  When I joined here 11 years ago I thought everyone was anonymous.  But I have regretted it for years.  I won't post anything I'm ashamed to put my name to.  I understand others wanting privacy with personal or medical questions, but my Mets opinions are all my own.

A heads-up for anyone changing or contemplating changing their name.

Once your username is changed, it appears that way right through the board, and back into the Archives.

For example, I just tried searching for user bikefixed.  Nothing found!

Do we need a thread showing the current username compared to the previous username?

What we need is a way to link former name and current name so posts under either name will appear in the same search.  Same is true when it comes to using messenger.  All three of the posters who changed their usernames as a result of this thread have been very active in their off line community. So, the switch in user name will be relatively easy for those of us who know of them off line to remember.  For those of us who do not know them off line, the switch can be much more difficult to remember.

A-HA!! I KNEW IT! Dave and Jamie always said "No, you're just imagining things. Don't be so paranoid." But I knew someone was cyberstalking me on social media. All the signs were there.

;-)

To be clear here, I'm being completely silly with this post. Mark would never do such a thing.

PennBoy, on the other hand...

Again, silliness. Is he still around

Wow, I feel something of a trailblazer!

My first initial, last name and street address!

PB moved away to Proto-Trump country and got bored trolling us all quite a few years ago.

so do you actually know him IRL?  and does your response mean even he didn't believe the nonsense he was posting?

I won't be using my real name.  It's not that I won't stand behind what I post here, but my name is pretty uncommon.  So if someone I know professionally googles me, I don't want MOL posts to be the first items they see.  (If you google me now, the first person who comes up is a guy who's in prison for arson, but is becoming a somewhat famous artist while he's incarcerated.  But nobody professionally confuses me with a prison inmate).  And fwiw, anyone I know IRL is aware of who I am on MOL, so it's not like I'm fully anonymous here.

I won't be requesting a switch to my real name. I'm wanted on [bogus!] felony raps in 3 states and am flying under the radar. You didn't read this. I didn't write this.

My user name is my birth name — so, no changes here. grin

No and no.

I think he did believe what he was saying, but he knew that by posting certain key phrases he could rule us all up and reveled in that.

He spent a few posts before he disappeared telling us that he had moved out of the area, to Real America, away from us deluded commies.

IIRC the only MOLer to ever knowingly meet PB was Tom Reingold.

Similar to ml1, I’m the only person in the country with my name. My user name here does have a website which I should maintain better, though. It’s mostly for photography, and I’ll eventually start using my username as my company name once I finally get set up for online purchasing. So I’m keeping it.

There are a number of accomplished Karen Marlowes around the country, and a bunch of them including  a doctor of pharmacology at Auburn, a National Park Service wildlife expert, and a few others), have all used my email address. I have emailed them, called them, responded to the people who sent them emails, and yet it continues to happen.

HowManyOfMe.com
LogoThere are
1
or fewer people with my name in the U.S.A.

How many have your name?
Edited to add, like ml1, anyone who knows me outside MOL knows my name. And every year I put my real name to a specific event which I advertise here on MOL with my real name in the post. I’m really not hiding, I just don’t feel like changing my username to my real name.

I'm on the fence. When I joined it was during the heated discussion of the shelter closing and the town agreed to let me get the cats out rather than send them to Newark's AHS.

My rescue was named Morgan Le Fay Cat Rescue, when I tried to use Morganlefay as a handle on MOL, hoping to find adopters in the midst of the discussion, it was unavailable so it became Morganna as the only option.

Even now people who contact me to adopt assume my name is Morgan so I'm living a double life.

Still, if it became policy I would have no problem using my name. And if I decide to run as the next Democratic Presidential Nominee, I stand by my statements on MOL!

MOL feels like a piece of the earlier internet, with it anonymity or pseudo-anonymity, which is one of the things I love about it. My handle isn't related to my name -- for those who've seen me mention I live in WO, it's a pretty straightforward just grabbing of a handy TLA here in town. I wanted an easy to remember, easy write handle, and when I signed up I was also inspired by seeing handles like ml1 and GL2.

Still, as much as I enjoy the early internet message forum vibe, this past year has made me aware that I could stand to see more people IRL, and I've been pondering sending out a post along the lines of "I'll be at [some bar] on [some date] after work, if anyone wants to show up". I'm not yet 100% I actually want to do that -- people aren't necessarily the same IRL as online, for better and worse -- but OTOH nothing ventured nothing gained?

We used to have regular IRL or F2F gatherings. Those were a hoot.

My username is my real initials.  I think most people who care either know me or have figured out who I am.  When I started posting here I had kids in the schools and mostly didn't want to embarrass them.  But after all this time, I'm not sure I want to change it.

I'm currently job searching. I KNOW people are googling me and being judgmental.

PB moved to London.  Last time we met was when he visited Hong Kong maybe 6-7 years ago.  We tried to get into the foreign correspondent's club without a membership number so he could see the large bar area that is used in many movies.  We got into the bar area, but couldn't buy drinks without a member number.  He tried to claim reciprocity with UPenn's club and showed his card.   The manager had to lug out a gigantic tome and thumb through it to learn and apologize that no relationship existed.

If we were to do that now, we'd need a decent outdoor space -- even vaccinated, I'm wary of hanging out indoors in groups. I was imagining just a casual after work thing, maybe a sort of "standing date" -- eg Thursdays after 6, walking distance from the train, whoever is around and wants to join, either in SO or Maplewood.
