Underage Drinking Bust

Has anyone else heard about this? I spoke with an employee of Above and was told they got busted on Thursday, February 25 by the ABC. During one of their "College Nights". I was told there were about a dozen underagers, the cops arrested 1 guy and an ambulance was called for 1 girl that was too drunk to leave under her own power. I was not there, but like I said, an employee that was there told me this. I'm a little surprised no one else has brought this up yet.

There's nothing in the South Orange Police blotter for that date.

would they lose their license for this?

They could, although not for a first offence.  More likely they would be fined.  It usually takes a pattern of offences over time.

Isn't that exactly why Cryans' got closed down? Although I am pretty sure they had more than one offense.

Is Above's business that bad? Usually it's dumps like Cryan's that has to inflict the dollar draft crowd on the neighborhood. Seems like an ominous sign for a somewhat upscale establishment.

Too bad they don't have political protection (if true).

I can't find any evidence that this actually happened. Wouldn't arrests be in the blotter?

Cryan's got closed down due to multiple offenses and also being a well known underage drinking location.

Usually, for a first offense, the establishment will be fined and not allowed to serve alcohol for either a certain amount of days either at one time (one week) or every Saturday for X amount of time.  It depends on the deal worked out with the ABC.  If the ABC offenses are serious enough they could be closed down, but that is rare for a fist offense

That said, their insurance will skyrocket and they will have to be very careful in the future.  If the restaurant/bar is enough of a local nuisance, the town could decide not to allow renewal of the license.

I haven't been able to find anything online either. But I did get this from an employee. That's why I was asking here. When I was searching, most of the stuff coming up was about Cryans. And even though it happened on October 18, the dates for the earliest stories were on December 6th.

is anything happening at the former Cryan's? I thought I heard something a while ago, but nothing lately.

It probably still smells of stale beer and cigarette smoke.

And basement...

I wouldn't be surprised if this happened. One Thursday a couple months back I was on a very late (for me) train home, maybe like 10:30 or 11 pm and there were several dozen college age types waiting on line on the sidewalk to get in Above. I had no idea they had college nights on Thursdays, let alone that they drew such a crowd.

Anyplace with booze and 21 and 22 year olds is a place that 19 and 20 year olds want to be, so I wouldn't at all be surprised if the ABC has come calling.

The Cryan's space was going to be taken over by the owners of Papillon 25 who were going to open a sports bar and use the Papillon liquor license for both spaces.  The rumor that won' t die is that there are problems with the waste lines that are causing Papillon to reconsider undertaking the project.
