Treeing Walker Coonhound archived

To all who might be interested he can be seen at the Jersey Animal Coalition in South Orange on Walton Rd. (same road as the South Orange Disposal site). I also have a key to the shelter and would be happy to meet interested parties during off hours.
Just to let you know how sweet he is he picked the nicest and sweetest woman in town to run in front of of her car. Our very own Leslie (owner of Bunnies) he jumped right in her car and after treating him to a pound of Roast Beef she brought him to the shelter to make sure he doesn't get run over.
Thank you Leslie....if I wouldn't have two trips scheduled in the next five weeks I'd take him in.
By the way this picture is the closest I found to his colouring. He is actually prettier then the one pictured.

I was the one who found this dog with my mom just last week. He melted my heart and gave kisses and despite his size just wanted to sit in my lap and be cuddled. He looks like he is a sweetheart in desperate need of people to take care of him. I would like to adopt him myself!

I did let him walk up to one of the stray cats that hangs out around the shelter and he didn't do a thing. The cat put quite a show on, very befitting for an adult BIG stray male and poor Bubba (shelter name Elivs) turned right around and headed on out of there. I don't think he would pursue a cat, especially if he/she would let him know it would not be appreciated.
To let you know how truly sweet he is. A lady with dog on leash approached me to find out what dog breed he was. Her dog, who as per her is very alpha, growled and jumped him (the dog was much smaller then Bubba). He never flinched. Didn't even pick up a lip. He could have had that little guy for lunch.
I hate to say this because my Sarge was really one of a kind but this guy is a damned close second. Every once in a while you come across the big old souls and he is one of them. I am not a person who likes when dogs jump up but he has this very sweet thing he does. When he is unsure of something he rises up and places both front paws around your neck and leans on you. He doesn't knock you over as it is a very controlled move he makes and he gets down the second you tell him but it is soooo cute. I walked through town and this big garbage truck came by and he just hugged me right then and there and put his big head on my chest and closed his eyes until the truck was gone. It was just the funniest thing. Also hounds tend to be bad leash walkers as they are lead by their "nose" and not by a person but he doesn't pull and is VERY responsive to the slightest leash correction which is important because he is big.
To give you an idea what I do when I test a dog and I rate them 1 to 10 (10 being best result):
1. Walking on leash (10)
2. Off leash and see how responsive he is to a person calling (whistling or just calling him Bubba) (9) - However he didn't know the name Bubba
3. Playing with a toy and taking it away (10)
4. rough playing/wrestling to see if he is "mouthy" (10 - no mouthyness at all)
5. touching him in all areas (10 - he literally fell over to get a belly rub)
6. tugging on ears, legs, tail, lips (10 - no negative reactions at all)
7. treats (10 no leaping up to grab it)
8. feeding with interference from plastic hand (10- no reaction)
9. feeding with interference from human hand (10 - no reaction) as you can see I am not stupid and point 8 always comes before point 9 (our plastic hand has tree fingers LOL)
10. Hunting drive (10 - no reaction other then wussing out LOL)
I did note that when I showed him yesterday evening to three men (lazy dog, monster and Pizzazz) he was friendly but tucked his tail. Seems he doesn't trust men as much as he trusts women (smart dog...just kidding guys). However he did warm up after a couple of minutes and he never displayed any aggression, just slight shyness.
Dogs who were on the street tend to be more weary of guys as they are more likely to chase them away or throw something at the dog. Not to say that all guys do that but most street dogs are careful around males.
Today in the village he let everybody pet him and this very nice lady with a young child in a stroller wanted to know more about him. The child had a bagle in her hands and the dog never moved. Several young girls where running around with very shrill voices and he never flinched nor did he react to the running by (Sorry for telling you girls to shush up cause it actually was good to know his motion drive is very low).
What can I say ... the dog is a gem.

Hi prettyprincess..sorry for leaving you out of the post. That was not intentional. Thank you for saving him. He is a gem and I cannot believe that you found this gem out on the street. What a shame but thanks to you and your mom he is safe and sound now. All we got to do is to find him the perfect home.

Well, Bajou, I think Bubba has found the perfect person---BaYOU!
And if you will indulge my fantasy a moment...I believe Sarge sent him to you.
Don't worry about your vacations, etc. that is insignificant---we can put our heads together and come up with a solution for that:wink: I think he knows where his home is, all that is left, is for him to convince you.:bigsmile:

I have a question. When do you consider a dog a stray/abandoned dog and when is he considered lost? It seems like this dog must have been raised by a family. I had my dog 'microchipped' in case he gets lost and loses his tags. Does NJ have a central location to register found/lost pets? When we lived on Long Island, Newsday would let you post free classified ads in the lost/found pet section which did help trying to relocate pets. I hope BubbaElvis either finds his family or finds a great home here. It seems like there are a few people who want him (if you dare give him up)

Calli, I was going to say the exact same thing--even go so far as to say Sarge has come back to Bajou. Seems like fate to me, Bajou. Love at first site and all. If he's as great as you say, I'd be happy to puppy sit if you ever needed it.
Another thing I was thinking is that this could be the perfect dog for ess, who seems to be seriously considering it--although he might be a bit bigger than she wanted. Seems like Bubba would be worth compromising for though. I love the name too.
If I weren't seriously committed to being a one dog household at this stage in my life (and seriously overwhelmed with enough boys right now) I'd take him, he sounds so wonderful!

Bajou I know it is hard to even think about another dog so soon after losing a good friend. However, Bubba seems a perfect dog for you. Go for it girl.

Dear All:
How funny...I was racking my brain all weekend and having the same reservations I had about Sarges and the size of my home all these years ago. However there is a fundamental difference and that is Bubba is a Hound. They need something to do. Sheppies will lay down and wait for their "person" to come home but hounds get bored. I had made a deal that I was going to foster him after this week and keep him for the 5 weeks until my trip. Well fate, the dog fairy, Sarge etc. came to play and Elvis (Bubba) had been adopted. Not just to any home either but to a group that traines dogs to be therapy dogs that stay in senior citizen homes.
I know some people will think that this is not the perfect home since it is not just one person but for a hound mentality this is perfect. Hounds are sweet and lovely but have energy and need attention. He has a whole group home full of people that want to hang out with him and he has the entire fenced in yard of the home to run in. They have several dogs that work the program so he has canine companionship which they need too. I will do the check up visit in 4 weeks and in 8 weeks and if he seems unhappy he will be coming home to this old lady (me).
In any case the training from this group is superb.

Some of you might not know but I have two other dogs so I am not lonely at all. Frankly I think the two girlies enjoy the extra attention they are receiving.
My kids are almost flying the coup ( last one in two years) and I work very long hours (train at 6:40AM and returning with train at 8:44pm). Really wouldn't be fair for such a young dog.

Funny thing....my son (18) realized I was on a mission with this dog. He walked over to me and said:" MOM look me straight in the eyes so you know how serious I am ..... NO MORE DOGS". I answered "Yes Sir" LOL

I am just curious to know. I used to take my dogs and two new baby pups to visit the nursing home where my MIL lived. The folks there totally ate them up! and the dogs adored the attention. It was a win/win situation indeed.

You know, someone was just walking her treeing walker coonhound at the dog park yesterday! What a gorgeous dog! So glad Bubba has a home (the other coonhound's owner told me that he requires like 3 hours of exercise a day!!! Yikes!!!)

We have many great dogs at the Jersey Animal Coalition but I would like to bring this special guy to your attention.
We have a purebred "Treeing Walker Coonhound" who is an absolute stunner but most of all an absolute sweetheart to boot. I evaluted him today and he passed with flying colors. I even took him to Maplewood Village and many people stopped me dead in my tracks to find out what kind of dog he was. He is a sweetheart who loves all people and dogs, he walks well on a leash and is "car proof" (I did have to keep him tied towards the back of the car as he would love to sit in your lap while driving which won't really work at his size). He is a large dog but don't let that turn you off. He is a beauty inside and out.
