Tree dropping leaves and clear sticky sap all over cars and yard archived

Hey everyone we've got a tree issue that I am looking for some feedback/advice on. We've got a 25 foot (or so) tree in our backyard that is dropping lots of shriveled dried leaves in our yard. It is also dripping some sort of clear sticky sap that is getting all over our cars in the driveway and making a mess.

Unfortunately I don't know what kind of tree this is but I was wondering ifanyone have any idea what might be causing this. This problem has been going on for about 3 weeks.

Thanks.
Our maple tree has been dropping tons of sap this year all over everything. We have been here almost 10 years and never remember having this much sap. I have no clue what is causing it.

My neighbor's tree hangs over my driveway and I think that it is an evergreen of some sort. It has been emitting goo onto my car and I ended up buying some kind of sap removal product because it is very hard to remove. I also don't want to attract ants to the car with all that sticky sap.

Put that sap to good use. About 40 gallons of sap will make you a gallon of Maple Syrup.

The sticky goo is from aphids. Its aphid dung.

aphid dung?? uggh. Tilia, any idea what causes this problem? Anything that can be done to alleviate it?

Alcohol will remove the sap quickly and easily.

Yes. You need to contact a tree company and have the tree treated for aphids.

Thanks so much for setting us straight, Tilia. I had absolutely no clue what was going on. Our tree's been dropping it, too. Our deck and everything on it has these tiny dots of sticky stuff (I guess the honeydew). I'll have to figure out a way to get it all off. As for getting rid of the aphids - there was a suggestion somewhere to attract ladybugs to your yard as they eat aphids.

Ummmm, as I said, use alcohol.

Call a tree care company for leaf and root treatments, both which are effective in controlling the sticky honeydew produced by aphid activity on tree leaves. recommend Maplewood Tree Experts.

aphids are chewing, sucking insects that remove the juices from the leave of trees and concentrate them into sticky sugary liquid that drops on the ground (or cars).

Yes, I read your suggestion, DEFCON. I just wasn't sure you could use alcohol all over a wooden deck...apparently, though, Mr. Shoxie said the stuff turns into sludge and comes off. Problem is finding the time to clean the entire deck - yuck.
