I did that with my mother's car. It was registered in NY, but I moved it to CT, not NJ. In CT it was very simple, one stop at the local office. But NJ motor vehicle rules seem to be their own special Circle of Hell.
actually not so easy. NJ DMV want you to have the paperwork from the circuit court that probated the will. (Can't remember what they called it) if there was no need for probate it's a big pita. NY doesn't require all this so my mom's NY lawyer was as frustrated as I was.
Do you know what specific paperwork? We have several documents.
It was a certified letter from surrogacy court. Maybe the short certificate here is a link to NJ DMV's instructions. Hope this helps. http://www.state.nj.us/mvc/Vehicle/TransferringVehicle.htm

I was reading the aggravation regarding transfer of title to a repossessed car. Has anyone titled an inherited car from a deceased N.Y. state owner?
Does that also require going to Somerville or Trenton?
