Train Station Hit and Run

we've talked about parking at Maplewood Station forever! now the urgency to get a parking spot evolves around late arrivers using the Nelson Garage driveway as a legal jug handle.

My car was parked at 6:15 like every morning. It was below the corner and the fire hydrant. A white car made a 190 degree turn using Nelson's and totally smashed two car doors on my car.

As i arrive home late there was no way to find the offending white car with my gold tinted paint all over it's backend. (One hopes they did not watch while they crashed theier own car). They left. With not a note of regret. My car sat for an entire workday unticketed or noticed for being illegal to drive (passenger door was only operable door).

Parking, security, and video surveillance outside of a major intersection for transit, commerce, and firehouse are attrocious - for a popular illegal turn around, and long time ignored problem!

Please edit your post to make clear what you say happened.

I hope you notified the police as soon as the damage was discovered. A check of body shops in the area may help identify the car that did this, assuming some damage was done to the car that hit yours. That is how my neighbor was able to identify the vehicle that totaled both of their cars in a hit and run while their cars sat in their driveway!

Also Nelson;s may have a security camera pointing in the right direction

wait, what?

heh-heh-heh.....

If I came back from work to find my car with major damage while legally parked I can easily envision myself so stressed that I might have trouble composing comprehensible sentences. I got the gist of what they are saying, and rather than judging them, I have sympathy for the state they are obviously in right now. It sucks when your property gets damaged through no fault of your own.

Definitely yes - to be honest, this was my first thought until I realized I couldn't figure out who hit who. Or if the car was really white and gold - or blue and black ???

Why? Wouldn't you just submit to insurance and since you were parked, it'd be no fault? Sucks but you call the police, you file it with insurance and you get compensated. And your premiums don't go up because it was no fault. Why would it be so upsetting especially given no one got hurt.

Off the top of my head I can think of a dozen reasons why it would be upsetting.

And I could be wrong, but I thought no-fault applied vs injury (via PIP), and that damage was still through collision (and thus with a deductible applied).

Minus deductabled which for many people is $500.

I didn't say it wouldn't be upsetting just wondering about the so stressed you'd have trouble being comprehensible part. Things happen, that's why you have insurance. I'd be glad no one was hurt, be annoyed for a few minutes and move on.

Not sure about the no fault thing. I know when I was determined to have no fault in a minor accident ( I was hit from behind by someone not paying attention), even the deductible was waived because it was 0% my fault. This only involved collision.

Thx. I will check with Nelsons for surveillance.

The phrasing was my fault. The spelling is Apple keyboard.

You had another identifiable car involved.

And I believe in that case the responsible car's insurance carrier covered the deductible. There is no responsible car identified in this case.

FWIW, the other car may well not have been white. My teen was involved in a very low-speed accident with a black car while parking our red car. Both cars damaged areas were covered in "white" and not a speck of each other's actual color. It was clear-coat, or something like that.

The deductible doesn't get waived because it's 0% your fault. The deductible gets waived because your insurance company determines it's not your fault AND is able to collect your deductible from the other driver's insurance company. If they can't collect the deductible elsewhere, it doesn't get waived.

From what I can piece together here:

  • kidshaver parks car on Dunnell between fire hydrant and corner.
  • Another car drives up Dunnell, toward station, drops off passenger at corner of Dunnell and Oakview. Car then turns around to go back up Dunnell toward Jefferson instead of continuing forward up the one way section of Dunnell or making a left onto Oakview, and during that turn hits kidshaver's car on the driver's side, smashing both driver and driver-side rear passenger doors.
  • Whoever did it left no note, so there's no way to find out who was responsible.
  • Someone should have been taping kidshaver's car while they were at work.

Ah. Thanks for clarifying.

Have you filed a police report? Even if there is little likelihood of the other car being identified, the MPD may be able to spread word to local body shops, plus your insurance company will want one. If you haven't already done it, I definitely suggest contacting MPD to file a report, if only to be able to provide a copy to your insurer.

Well, you have more fortitude than I do if it wouldn't upset you. I know I would be upset by the damage to my car (even if fixable), by the likely deductible payment, and just the hassle of dealing with insurance, repairs, etc.

In the grander scheme of things, damage to a car that no one was even in is not even on the radar of things to be devastated over.

In the grander scheme of things, one could spend their days worrying about world peace, terrorism or Brangelina. But absent some "devastating" issue, handwringing matters of time and money such as this usually suffice for the vast majority of the population. And in nearly every case it's not really up for us to decide where that line is.

Who knows what this person's financial situation is? Not everyone in Maplewood is flush with cash and can just suck up a $500 (or $750 or $1000) deductible, shrug their shoulders and move on with their day.
