traffic cameras on Springfield Ave

I have noticed that cameras are popping up on all of the traffic lights going down Springfield Ave. Does anyone know if they are for ticketing or survallance?

Those cameras are for detecting when to change the lights. Resolution is too low to read license plates. It's cheaper and lasts longer then the old method of burying cables near the intersections (light change timer would go off when a car approached).

The cameras that ticket you are different. They are larger boxes that are on the side of the road (About 10 feet off the ground).

They could probably be used for anything. If the police are smart, they'll use the cameras to issue citations for GOOD behavior. That has been shown to have a positive effect on entire populations, not just those who receive citations.

Thanks for not plowing through the red light, please find attached a BK coupon for free small fries. smile

These?

interesting, thanks for the info.

What sideshowmel posted - sensors to control the change for traffic signals, so nothing to do with rewards for good drivers or penalties for bad.

They can't be red light cameras since that program ended last December. There are no such cameras anymore in NJ, and the legislature hasn't tried to resurrect them. Did anyone realize this, or just decided it didn't need mentioning?

That still doesn't mean yellow=floor it, but you won't get a ticket if you misjudge your window or a pedestrian crosses while you turn.
