This is what's wrong with Maplewood. There's nothin' fun to do.

There's no reason we couldn't do like they did in Maryland and set up ice bumper cars in Memorial Field.

Big problem is - even if we filled in a skate pond in Memorial Park like we used to - temperatures have rarely been cold enough for it to freeze properly in recent years.

Sounds like a fun option for the South Mountain Ice Rink,

They can’t even build a field for the kids to play ball on let alone an ice skating rink.

I am here to tell you that both rinks at Codey Arena are booked from before dawn to almost midnight, 7 days a week.  This photo is from yesterday evening.  We will be back for practice at 9 tonight

Is the suggestion that the township build an ice rink with a refrigeration system? I'd probably be in favor, but we need to consider we live in a town where a lot of people don't want to spend money on such things.

But if it's just flooding a field and putting a fence around it and hoping it will freeze, what Jamie said.

Nah

I've heard that many NJ towns, like South Orange, have skate houses next to their ponds because the ponds routinely used to freeze hard enough to allow skating. Not so much any more.

No one is saying that we should build rinks.  There is no way or reason that these towns could afford that.

Why we can't have outdoor rinks without refrigeration like they did back in the good old days.

Has anyone seen the temporary rink in Westfield these past couple of winters? It’s under cover and enormous, across the street from Shop Rite in Garwood. I assume it’s kept frozen mechanically. Take a ride down - it’s something to see!

Agreed! I’m convinced Maplewood likes it dry and stale

Ice bumper cars sounds like SO much fun!

yes, we skated there a bunch.  It's owned by the owners of Union Skating Arena on route 22.  It stays busy but a couple of neighbors make it pretty tough to access.

What is the current shape of the roller hockey rink in DeHart Park?

An assessment is still pending.

The rink is gone -- that area has been turned into basketball courts.

Some of the neighbors are not happy with the basketball courts and have complained on MOL.

Between 2019 and 2020

Hoping the rink returns
