The Glass Castle

anyone seen the movie yet? This is one of my favorite books. I'm deeply disturbed by the reviews describing the mother in the story as eccentric, quirky or even evil/monstrous.

Not one mentions the mother's severe mental illness. She was so clearly bipolar from her behavior. Wasn't this a key element of the book? Why isn't this movie being treated as, at least in part, an exploration of the effects of mental illness on the children? It was so powerful to me because of the mental illness aspect. Otherwise, it's just an abusive parent.

(And the reviews for the movie suck so I'm curious if anyone liked it)

Loved the book, but don't know if I will see the movie.  It seems better as a book.  I don't see how script writers and directors could make it their own and not ruin the author's story.
