What are your thoughts? Currently, I like Turkey Hill as a middle of the road yet with strong quality control and taste/favor. We used to purchase Edy's and Breyers but Turkey Hill won us over.

I agree with the comment on Blue Bunny (A little fake) but better then some with Ice Cream sandwiches.

Interesting that Turkey Hill is NOT on the list.
THE best vanilla I have ever had is Breyers.

Turkey Hill is not bad - a little too aerated, but pretty good for a supermarket ice cream. I prefer Welsh Farms, which is creamy and much heavier. The best, or should I say, my favorite, though (excluding "microbrews" and local creameries such as Applegate Farms) is Ben & Jerry's.

I should add that I have no idea which is the best vanilla. I would never buy vanilla; if I am going to go the ice cream route, it's going to be a much more interesting flavor.

I like Hagen Daz (sp?) Light Caramel Cone but I don't see it any more. They have a new "5" line.

I like Edy's Slow Churned.

Also the "Skinny Cow" ice cream sandwiches.

Blue Bunny seemed fake and gummy to me, but I thought maybe it's because I'm not used to eating "real" full-fledged ice cream.

I like the rich ice creams for their richness, e.g. haagen dazs and ben&jerry's. But I also like the "poor" ice creams because I have trouble digesting ice cream, and sometimes, I just don't want the full fledged thing, so I enjoy Turkey Hill or Edie's.

Eden Gourmet has a nice variety of ice creams. Some brands are local. They have one called 5 Borough, obviously from NYC, which has some interesting flavors, like pumpkin.

I'm obsessed with caramel cone!! I wish they'd make it a regular flavor!!!
I clear the shelf whenever I find it...
:hungry:

lars....wait....it's not a permanent flavor? I haven't found the light version any more, but I thought they always had it.

Ciao Bella. I know it's gelato, but it's awesome.
I once had a special edition Ben & Jerry's pure vanilla that was out of this world. To bad it's not available anymore.

tigerlily:

a) I didn't know there was a "light" version; I'm going to pretend I didn't hear that!!
b) I assumed it wasn't a permanent flavor only because I rarely find it... sometimes at shoprite, once at target, but never consistently...
c) you sure are FAST with the websites... is this your screensaver?!

:rolling: No, but I've been so bummed out that Kings doesn't carry the light version anymore, that well...it's been on my mind.

They usually have the full version of this at the Kings in SH.....

ha!

I try never to use the words "light" and "ice cream" together in the same sentence. Possible exception: " this bowl of ice cream looks a little light. Howsabout another scoop?!"

thanks for the tip of Kings in SH, though. I will be on the lookout for your light version....

Haagen Dazs - the new Five collection is fantastic. Also Ciao Bella - the pistachio is beyond.

The slow churned (light) versions of Edy's (or is it Turkey Hill) are very, very good.

Store Brand - WF 365 is great and good value. The french vanilla is delicious.

I was going to say 365 cookies-n-cream or mint chip, but lately, I have been getting big air pockets, ice cream that has kinda shrunk away from the sides and a bit of freezer burn.

did it stop me from eating it? no.

I like Ben & Jerry and H. Daz too but think of them as top shelf. I guess that article is for top shelf supermarket product.

Tom R. good suggestion about Eden G. there in South Orange. I'd like to check out their Ice Cream options. That is a great store!

Speaking of Ice Cream and all. I've been going to the Hersey Ice shop there in Maplewood Village. The ice cream is pretty good. A few years back the ice cream was really really bad which stopped me in my tracks and vomitted never to go back (tee-hee). Changing to Hersey was a good move.

Love the Hershey's ice cream!

Love ALL the ice creams mentioned. Recently tried the Blue Bunny brand (got it at Pathmark). Good stuff. In a league with Turkey Hill and Edy's. Nice flavors. On the "light" side (not really creamy, or as Tom would put it, "poor"). Worth a try.

The greatest flavor I've ever had from the grocery store is Ben & Jerry's Creme Brulee, avail at Pathmark. Simply the best, the very, very best. Like a serving = a carton best.

I love Turkey Hill Ice Cream. Dutch Chocolate is my favorite.

For my money, Turkey Hill's French Vanilla is as close to perfect as you can get in a store-brand ice cream.

I do love the Edy's Slow Churned Mint Cookies and Cream, though. (half-the-fat means twice the serving, right?)

Breyers always tastes funny to me, and I don't know why. Others love it.

And I've been pleasantly surprised by the store-brand ice cream at A&P and Stop & Shop, especially the vanilla.

My favorite Mint Chip is made by Turkey Hill because they are the only ones who use the smooth dark slivered chocolate. SO GOOD

Alden's Ice Crem is AWESOME! My kids love the vanilla bean and I love the blackberry!

It has basic ingredients: Cream, skim milk, evaporated cane juice, egg yolks, and "stabilizer" (locust beam gum, guar gum, more cane juice), and the vanilla bean has vanilla extract and vanilla bean specks as well. (we're out of blackberry since I try to avoid eating it too often.)

NO CORN SYRUP, which is hard to find in ice cream (I think Breyers is the only other that I know of.)

(found at Whole Foods and sometimes Kings)

mmmmmm... duuuuuutch chocolate.....

I love me some Ciao Bella Valrhona Chocolate, however I can only get it handpacked at WF. But I think Ciao Bella is the bees knees.

As for poor ice creams, I like some of the Ben and Jerrys flavors and the Edy's Girl Scout cookie flavors, Thin Mint and Samoas is pretty rockin even though the ice cream is very light with air and missing the heavy cream.

Funny story about local ice cream: When we were looking for a house out here, I did no research about the community whatsoever, and was a little concerned that I knew nothing aside from the fact that it felt right and was an easy commute. Rather than using google, etc. let alone Maplewood Online, which I knew nothing about, we stopped into the Maplewood Ice Cream ship and I told my wife that if the chocolate shake I was about to order was any good, we would know this is the right place for us. It was one of the best I've had. Props to the ice cream shop who also make a decent hot fudge sunday. Me and the kids like going down there once in a while.

I think the best ice cream i have ever gotten in a store is Green & Black's chocolate. And typically chocolate ice cream is far from my first choice in flavors.

You can find them in most supermarkets. There's a whole Skinny Cow line - sandwiches, fudgesicle-esque things, etc. Pretty good for "diet" ice cream.

Blue Bell, and when you can get it, Applegate Farm ice cream, particularly the pumpkin ice cream.
