Super Asian supermarket archived

I just went to the new "Golden Valley" supermarket on Morris Ave in Springfield. It opened three days ago and is wonderful. All the things you'd expect from Kam Man or other stores: winter melon, lemongrass, green radish, fishes, meats, Chinese sausage, spices, rices, noodles, etc. The manager (owner?), who was very pleasant, says he owns stores in Flushing and Manhattan.

Really a treat to have this so close by!
Yay! I was trying to figure out the other day if they had opened.

Oh, good to know! Will have to get here myself very soon.

You beat me to it! I saw that it was open on Wednesday but I couldn't stop. I went today -- now I don't have to drive to Route 10 to get my Taiwan cabbage -- YAY! However, half the store isn't stocked yet and the prepared food section is totally bare. I asked them when this would be available and they said "soon". I would hope so! LOL! So wait a few days before going.

But the butcher and fresh fish areas are gorgeous -- very clean and the product looks very fresh (and affordable). I'm so glad they're close by -- now I don't have to overbuy and freeze stuff.

This is great to hear.

Fresh shrimp was $4.99/lb, as opposed to $7.99 at ShopRite.

Is this where Seabra was?

Yes.

Probably not "fresh" as most shrimp sold in stores is previously frozen and defrosted in store.

Almost always the case (shrimp doesn't travel well and boats spend days at sea), and why I prefer frozen shrimp:

Can't wait to check out Golden Valley tomorrow!

Right in my town! Yay...for a change, haha.

I meant "fresh," as opposed to frozen, dried or canned.

No shrimp is fresh here. Shrimp are frozen on the boats -- if it looks "fresh", it's defrosted.

Thank you for this! I was thinking about when they are going to open. So excited that I don't have to trek to Kam Man. Hope they are just as good!

I agree with @noo2wood, sliced meat for Korean dishes would be amazing!

Can anybody supply the exact address? How does it compare to H-mart for korean supplies?

It's next to NYSC (New York Sports Club) in Springfield on Morris. Just google NYSC. Very close.

Thanks @nan. Here's the exact info for anyone else needing it:
Gold Valley Supermarket, 211 Morris Ave, Springfield, NJ 07081

When you say prepared food, is thre going to be an eat in or take out section like Kam Man has? What i'd give for a local bahn mi and closer bubble tea spot.

You are very lucky to have this place near you. I miss those stores in NJ, though I'm enjoying Fairway here in NYC. Not the same, of course.

We are indeed Tom. But you have Chinatown, Koreatown, and Little India all within a subway ride oh oh

Sure, but you all have cars. Fairway in Chelsea is a mile and a half from me, and I go on foot or bicycle, so I have to gather up a bunch of energy before I go. I don't mind, really, but I can't see myself doing my weekly shopping in Chinatown. I left my car in the country and am probably going to sell it since I use it so little. My wife keeps a car here in the city because she drives all over. Shopping by car here is usually not so much fun.

Is it cash only? Or do they take Amex?

In Hong Kong, if it doesn't move, it doesn't sell.

@Dave -- talk about fresh fish! I loved those places. Such a wonderful cultural difference from what we know here.

It appears as if it's take out only, but since they weren't totally put together yet, it remains to be seen if they'll have tables & chairs.

They accept credit cards, although I didn't notice which. (I used a MC.) Beautiful produce. Lots and lots of dumplings, in two separate areas. A whole aisle of noodles and different kinds of rice. Dozens of kinds of ramen. The fish looked fresh but the many varieties weren't labeled as far as I could see. (Nice looking pompano!) There were long but quick-moving lines at the cash register, where it seemed as though managers were helping the cashiers learn price codes.

I hope we can set up a field trip led by someone knowledgeable. I feel like I missed a lot!
