Trump's Foreign Policy speech

(I just looked in the Politics category and there were only 2 threads with Trump in the name and they were the last 2 - so we were overdue.)

It should start shortly - will he say "Let's make the world great again"?

Of course, all Presidents put American first.  The question is always how to do that and in this regard, I don't think Trump will have much to say.

After WW I, for example, the majority thinking was that disengagement with Europe was the best way to put America first.  After WW II, the majority thinking was that we needed to remain engaged with the rest of the world.  It's pretty hard to strike a balance and figure out where were should really get involved and where we should not get involved regardless of the human cost.

ok, bottom line of the speech - a Trump win will bring World Peace.  How can you say no to that?

I'm sure he learned a lot about world peace as owner of the Miss USA pageant.

First you have to believe it.

Well, yes.  But if folks stopped believing the crap that politicians utter to get elected, no one would get elected.

All I know is he's going to have great foreign policy. The best. It will blow your mind how good it's going to be.

ISIS?  fugetaboutit - they'll be history on day 2 of his presidency.

His speech sounded politically typical, but I liked it.

Fixed that for you.

This was my favorite line: "A Trump administration will lead a free world that is properly armed and funded, and funded beautifully."

Well, we wouldn't want it if was funded ugily!  Man, this is gonna be Y U G E !!!!!

"Funded beautifully." Yes, that's a doozy.

I'm curious to see if there is much comment on the "America First" business. Pat Buchanan picked up on that motto, also. Anyone read Philip Roth's "The Plot Against America"?

It's easy to make fun, but if Hillary tries to policy-wonk him to death, she'll be in for a race.

Clinton will need to take her opponent very seriously.  My concern with Trump is that he will change his spots and start spewing some oily simple solutions that have fairly broad-based appeal.

I think she's smart enough to do that. The GOP efforts have clearly failed here. Hillary's primary message about Trump to date has been that he's "dangerous" so hopefully that's a sound bite that can stick.

I also think she can take him in a debate without resorting to, um, penis jokes.

Don't you mean "piece"?

I think she will, but how she goes about that is what will matter. The bar is so low for him that on those occasions when he sounds almost reasonable and keeps the outright lies around 50%, he will get positive coverage and responses.

In TPAA Lindbergh appeases the Nazis to gain power.  What evil foreign power is Trump appeasing?   I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'm not understanding the comparison.

Rachel Maddow discussed "America First" tonight, showing pictures of Lindbergh and quoting him and interviewing Presidential Historian Michael Bechloss.

The point isn't about appeasing a foreign power. It is again about appealing to nativism and xenophobia, and perhaps isolationism.

The phrase "America First" is an empty vessel, into which the demagogue pours whatever it is he or she wants to serve.

It could be isolationism.  It could also be "kill all those other ones".  Mr. Trump seems to be of the latter category.

And antisemitism

Too bad Clinton didn't take an isolationist approach in Libya.    Would Trump have done better?   I think yes.   He would have stayed away.
