Trump and the line that keeps getting crossed

Around 5:30 am this morning Trump Tweeted, "Did Crooked Hillary help disgusting (check out sex tape and past) Alicia M become a U.S. citizen so she could use her in the debate?" This missive is a desperate attempt to revive an old scandal that plagued Ms. Machado and was widely debunked. The truth is that, Trump's "sex tape" is a still image from a reality show she was on back in 2005 and she was fully clothed. No other sex tape has ever surfaced.

But Trump doesn't care about truth or decency. What he did today goes beyond political incorrectness, or "mean Tweeting". This is bullying. This is liable. This is unacceptable. I know Trump says something stupid or mean on a daily basis, but this particular attack on Machado (a doubling-down on the bullying he's subjected her to over many years) has me appalled.

Remember when the statements like, "there are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what...My job is not to worry about those people." or "binders full of women" derailed Romney's candidacy? Or, Qualye's "P-O-T-A-T-O-E"? Howard Dean's screaming excitement? And, even Gore's sigh heard around the world?

How did we get from there to here? Have we allowed Trump to take our political discourse and basic civility so far into the gutter that making false, indecent claims about a private citizen is fair game?

It's Trump's Gettysburg address.

Translate for Grampa please.

It's okay if you're a Republican.

Being forced to hear all of Trump's horribleness and wondering why he hasn't been thrown off the ballot, I am reminded of poor Howard Dean, who got thrown off the ticket because of his excited laugh. Talk about apples and oranges!

He has racked up enough offenses to be impeachable between election day and inauguration day. This has been discussed in at least one article.

If he get's enough support to win, I doubt there will be enough support for an impeachment. But one can wish his voters have a "Brexit" moment of awareness.

I think you're all forgetting that Hillary sent emails.

Emails, people.

Explain

ETA: That the Brexit vote was correct and the world didn't end?

Let's face it: there is no line for him to cross. There has never been a line, a bar, nothing. He was treated as entertainment and it stuck for almost a year. Recently, many have had their Come to Jesus Moment and woke the eff up that this could really happen and true investigative reporting has commenced. But sorry...no line for Trump. He gets to say and Tweet what he wants because no one is stopping him and it's ratings gold for all.

That so many of the pro-Brexit voters did not understand what they were voting for - mostly because of Boris & Co's populism, xenophobic rhetoric and outright lies (about how much UK sends to EU monthly, for example).

That's it right there. He drives ratings. So the networks pander to cover him. Recall the hour of free publicity he got for his new casino disguised as a big reveal about birtherism?

How many pro-Brexit voters felt this way?

How many pro-Brexit voters felt this way?

About 1.2 million of them.

I suppose 3 per cent could be considered many. Its probably normal

They haven't "Brexited" yet.

This short thread is a perfect example of thread drift.

Since shortly after Kellyann Conway was appointed as Trump's third campaign manager I have thought that if she were to be fired that would represent a third strike and Trump would be out.

I have just heard from Rachel Maddow that there I some talk that Kellyann may be replaced.

With a guy like Trump, it's always someone else's fault.

I had a supreme moment of surreality the other night watching Rachel Maddow. There was some guest on who was talking in detail about Trump's mysogyny, and when I realized this was now the current hot topic of discussion about a major candidate for President, my head just about exploded at how far down the rabbit hole this election has drawn us.

But my main ire is still held for the Trump voter. It's one thing to be an *******. It's quite another thing to revere him.

Loved the new Crowdpac started by Marine Corp Veteran Peter Kiernan. He's getting pledges for veteran's charities if Trump releases his taxes. Its being matched 5 to 1 by tech billionaire Ried Hoffman of LinkedIn. It met its $1.000,000 mark and will be matched with $5,000,000 so its now pushing to get to $10,000,000! Nice idea. You pledge to donate only if Trump releases them.

I'm in.

someone should just ask him the simple question - in the last 10 years, how many years did you pay federal income taxes?

Reflecting upon Trump’s actions, Matt Borges, the Republican Party chairman in battleground Ohio, said, “Can this thing just end — please?”

And he may just say "every year." Prove he lied.

I haven't heard more about a blind trust for the Trump company if he becomes President. Anyone know?

from Politico on 9/16/16:

Donald Trump Jr. insisted Friday that his father would place his business holdings in a blind trust managed by his adult children, who are executives at his company, defending the proposed arrangement against pushback that it would not truly be a "blind trust."

"We're not going to be involved in government. We wouldn't be involved in government," Trump Jr. told ABC's George Stephanopoulos during an interview on "Good Morning America."

Remarking that his father would not be making any decisions "as it relates to the company," Trump Jr. called it "standard operating procedure for any president who has had businesses, whether it was George Bush, whether it's — he's not going to have anything to do with it."

Stephanopoulos then noted that both Bushes who served as president, along with Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney, all put their assets in a blind trust during the campaign, adding, "your father hasn't done that."

"He will certainly do it if he becomes president," Trump Jr. said, to which Stephanopoulos responded, "A blind trust, it's not a blind trust if it's being run by his children."

Once again, Trump Jr. disputed the characterization.

"It is because he'll have nothing to do with it, George. He’s said that. He wants nothing to do with it. He wants to fix this country. He wants get the country on the right track again," Trump Jr. remarked, agreeing with the notion that Stephanopoulos proposed a "wall between you and your siblings and your father."

Stephanopoulos pressed, "He's still going to know what the businesses are, where they are."

"We're not going to discuss those things. We're just not—it doesn't matter. Trust me. As you know, it's a very full-time job. He doesn't need to worry about the business," Trump Jr. said. "The business is in good hands. He trusts us with that, 100 percent."

So does anyone think he will respond to the $6,000,000 that has already been pledged for him to produce his taxes so that the donation will go to the vets? It would be an interesting debate question next Sunday.
