NJ Corruption? Say it isn't so.

NJ is finally completing the NJ shore route 35 Sandy rebuild. The cost is staggering. Corruption or just a lot of work?

The final price tag for the reconstruction will hit $341 million — a cost that is 31 times more per mile than a typical road cost in New Jersey, the Press found. That is three times the money the state government spends each year to keep its bridges in working order.
...
If current budget projections hold firm, the average cost, per mile, would come in at $27.3 million. That's 30 percent higher than the per-mile cost for building the Garden State Parkway in the 1950s, after inflation is factored in.  Kam Movassaghi, former head of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, told the Press that 5 percent to 10 percent is a good baseline for cost overruns on a large-scale government project — not 29 percent.
...
Richard Hammer, commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Transportation, did not respond to requests seeking comment.

$27.3 million per mile - over $5,000 per foot !!!

We have advocates begging for a gas tax increase. Could be the highway money is there but not being wisely spent.

A gas tax increase could lead to new boondoggles instead of better highways.

Re the highway money - I don't think these repairs came from "Highway money" ... I think they came from "Sandy money".  But I could be wrong.  At any rate, I don't think that "the highway money is there" anymore.

104 million will be paid for by NJ.

Maybe they can help finance it through a temporary toll like they did with the GSP,

it sounds like a small handful of people are getting rich off of this project.
