Kasich suspends campaign

That's all, folks.

Ronald Reagan said that he did not leave the Democratic Party, the Democratic Party left him.

Will any of these people have the guts to say that the Republican Party has left them?

Maybe, but they still won't vote for Hillary. (a lot of them won't, anyway...)

I have friends in Ohio who keep warning about the man but he is a Repub that I actually could have voted for.   Don't need to but I could have.

Best Regards,

Ron Carter

The Republican Party left us in 1988 when Papa bush destroyed it.

"Abandon all hope ye who enter here."

If you didn't see the amazing ad from 1964 about the Repub with cold feet...

Rachael Maddow aired it in a segment on Monday, May 2.  Of course the daisy ad.

"Confessions of a Republican"  4 minutes long.  A must See!  The guy who is in the ad appears now all these years later.  He really was a Republican, Bill Bogert, Actor.

 Best Regards,

Ron Carter

I thought he would have been a reasonable man. I'm always listening for someone willing to discuss balancing the budget. I don't want to bank on one party easily winning so I hope for reasonable choices on both sides.

I heard a commentator on MSNBC address this last night. Said that ELECTED official won't come out for HRC but all the behind the scenes folks (advisors, staff ,etc) will probably vote for her. They are looking ahead to 2020 already.

he conned the press into telling us that he was "reasonable," or not extreme.  He is as far right as almost anyone in the GOP, and he is in fact pretty extreme on reproductive issues (he's one of the ones in favor of de-funding Planned Parenthood.  In his favor, he didn't turn down the federal funds to expand Medicaid in Ohio.  But that's apparently what passes for "reasonable" these days in the GOP.  Kasich wasn't cruel and heartless enough to keep people from getting health insurance out of political spite.

It's a good time to form a new party.

Spouse thinks Kasich's quick exit means he's gonna be the 3rd party nominee that down-ballot candidates can cling to so they don't have to say they support Trump. I don't see it, though.

Kasich was running for Veep.  He won't get it.  good guy.  awful execution.

Good riddance to bad trash. Not a good guy at all. An anti-woman, anti-labor, anti-education liar with nothing original nor productive to offer. He faked being a nice guy, "the adult on the stage."  Perhaps he was less disgusting on stage than the others but a supreme a$$hole nonetheless.

+100  Anyone with any understanding of US political history since the advent of the Gingrich era knew that Kasich was bad news.

Did he call for forcibly deporting 11 million people? Did he viciously attack an entire ethnic group? Did he say people should be excluded from the country on the basis of religion? Did he come out in favor of torture or killing the relatives of terrorists?

Kasich is a Conservative. I disagree with his positions. But if it requires uniting with conservatives to defeat fascists I'll do it. I hope conservatives like the author of the linked article will choose to unite with liberals to defeat fascism.

Yes.

Ha.  "Donald Trump is a hemorrhoid of a human being..."  salon like Fox news is an excellent source of material.  I prefer The Onion though.  Anyway,  it looks like the race to white house is between a DINO and a wild card.

+100%.

I didn’t buy into his hoke y-pokey, countrified , and “I get along with everyone” persona, it’s all a bunch of bull. He could care less in reaching out  to minorities, which seems to be a Republican handicap. After reading about this stint as Governor, I was completely turned-off.

Gov. Kasich To Black Lawmaker: ‘I Don’t Need Your People’

"Today, in 2001, it feels more like 1811 in the state of Ohio under a governor who just does not get it. I want to read some of [Kasich’s] quotes. He said, ‘I don’t look at things from that standpoint. It’s not the way I look at things. I want the best possible team I can get and hopefully we will be in a position that we are fully diverse as we go forward.” As we go forward, as we go along, by and by, someday. I remember Martin Luther King saying so eloquently that wait almost always means never. Through his actions and deeds, Governor Kasich has declared that Ohio is open for business, but if you are African-American you need not apply. If you are hispanic, you need not apply. If you are Asian-Indian, you need not apply. And Oh My God I have a few women but we don’t need many more, so for women, you need not apply.

And then to have the pure unadulterated gall to say that he can’t find anyone. In that same caucus meeting when I said to the governor “if you need help, we can help you” and he said, and I quote, “I don’t need your people.” Now as an African-American, I was kind of perplexed about “I don’t need your people.” I wasn’t quite sure whether or not he was referring to my ethnic group people or my people as in the 350,000 constituents I serve in this state that represent all ethnic groups, all religious groups. I didn’t understand what “I’m not going to hire your people” means."

State Senator Nina Turner (D-OH)

We're not being fair to Kasich - anyone running for the GOP nomination in 2016 has to be a major league a$$hole, just to get a foot in the door. It's a prerequisite.

among the pundit class, one of the strongest biases is the search for the "reasonable" or "moderate" Republican.  The desire for pundits to appear non-partisan or even-handed is so overwhelmingly strong that they will bestow the title of "reasonable Republican" on any fraud or charlatan who can speak without sounding like a lunatic.  So Paul Ryan and his bogus budgets gets a chance to be the reasonable Republican, or John Kasich and his homespun "charm," or "straight talking" John McCain/Chris Christie.  But all of these guys are nearly equally conservative, even if some of them don't make nutty pronouncements all the time.

astute observation

I think the creation of right-wing think tanks and media outlets has done lasting damage to the GOP.  In the short run, coming up with "ideas" and developing memes to distribute through talk radio, Fox News, right wing blogs, etc. helped win a lot of elections.  But over time the groupthink has been so strong and so rigidly enforced that there was no critical examination of what they were telling voters outside the right wing bubble.  The alienation of women and Latin Americans should have been obvious to anyone if they were listening to dissenting voices.  Not to mention how the continued demonization of LGBT people turns off many young people.  But there were no dissenting voices in the bubble, and the voices outside the bubble were always dismissed due to "liberal bias."

and that's how you get candidates like Trump and Cruz, who are loathed by a great number of people outside the Republican base.
