It's like Stalinism, Slavery, Holocaust, Nazis, Chinese Camps, Communism, Japanese Camps, Gay Mafia!

OK, I'll take up the challenge of aggregating the words of all the idiots (GOP) who continue to make these ridiculous comparisons. Extra points if you can post a liberal quote on the topic. Here goes:

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — Alaska lieutenant governor hopeful Dan Sullivan said Wednesday he apologizes if he offended anyone with his use of the term "slavery" in comments he made about the payment of union dues.

Are the musings of the Alaska lieutenant governor hopeful really newsworthy?

All 11 of the black guys in Alaska are pretty steamed about this one. But he's sorry if they were offended so it's okay.

The job comes with significant foreign policy responsibilities. Especially important in this time of Russian aggression.

He could be a heartbeat away from someone who will never become president.

I'm far from a political expert but my Google-Fu tells me that you and I define "significant" in different ways.

We really need that sarasm emoticon

Wait, 10 more bruthas moved to Alaska?

I wish they would stop apologizing for things they say that are correct just because the usual suspects do not like the truth of their role being pointed out. Forced union dues may not quite be slavery but it is like the role of pimps who take their cut.

Good timing. I'm going to have a roll of pimps for lunch.

So it's not like slavery, and he was apologizing for something that wasn't correct.

My peeve is when someone apologizes using the phrase "if anyone was offended." The apology is for what you did, not for how other people perceived it.

I have no issue comparing forced payments to slavery. It may not be the best analogy but it does illustrate a lot of truth about the arrangement.

Is working for a temp agency slavery? Or a contracting company?

The hyperbole in your posts is astounding. Even more so becasue you don't mean it as such.

A whole thread, nay a whole college class, should be devoted to the litany of stale, insincere phrases used by public figures these days, especially when caught with their pants down (sometimes literally). We need George Orwell or H.L. Menken for times like this.

Shall we look at some pictures to see what real slavery looked like?

They do not require people to pay to work. The employer pays.

So if the employer paid the union dues, you'd be ok with that? Please.

That's like saying payroll taxes paid by employers don't affect salary.

You know that if someone were to use that argument with you, you'd say that the person would be able to negotiate more money for themselves if the temp or contracting agency weren't involved.

I guess citizenship is forced slavery, because you're forced to pay your taxes.

Actually, residency; you have to pay taxes anyway.

Living anywhere -- is there a spot on Earth where there are no taxes or payments required? Even in Afghanistan you have to pay off the local warlords.

So then life itself is like slavery. And like the Holocaust -- every one of us is going to die, after all.

In other words, thanks for the meaningless analogies.

AP reports; you decide.

I, for one, am concerned about Putin "rearing his head" in our closest state, as is former 1/2-term governor Palin.

We are slaves to the government. That is a freedom we give up for protection. Which is exactly why government should only be involved in safety and infrastructure and should be as small as possible.

Yep. Every time the wounds begin to heal, the government forces its way into my shed and whips me raw. Then they rape my sister and send my kids into the fields to work 18 hour days in the blazing sun.

I can't believe we put up with this. I don't think you've ever been more right, zz.

Further evidence that you don't understand the concept of slavery.

Meanwhile, at the Bundy ranch...

“That bunch, the SS squad or something to do with Hitler, shouldn’t have guns there aimed at the people,” one Bundy supporter told KLAS.

“At some point, you have to draw a line in the sand. I guess this is it,” another militia member said

Definitely describes unions and government.

I'll play:

The Accountable Care Act sign ups are JUST LIKE Nazis putting Jews on trains to concentration camps.

Campfield, of course, isn't the first Republican to compare the government's attempt to insure millions of people to a government's attempt to kill millions of people.

Yes, we already know that you consider union members to be in situations "like that of a slave." See my post above.

Like an employer? Or a teacher?

the big difference between your situation, zoinks, and that of a slave? you're free to go.

I'll never forget the time the guy down the block from us wanted to retire from his union job at the steel plant. The shop stewards came after him with bloodhounds, whips and shotguns. Whwn they heard he'd gotten on a train north, they called out the militia.

Horrible business, this union slavery.

Tom, it is a terrible metaphor, but it is indeed a metaphor, or if "like" or "as" is used, then it's a simile.

You're being quite literal.
