International Migrant Influx

I've never seen anything like this before. Thousands and thousands of migrant workers. France is now willing to take in 24,000,Britain 20,000 and Germany is responding also. I'm sure the United States will also assist as always. Rep Peter King said something that I was thinking. We have to be careful. With the Syrian refugees could come terrorists, an easy way to get into other countries.

Yes, it was pointed out on a different had a few days ago. Not everyone believes it's anything to worry about.

I hope so, but haven't seen much action so far, other than anti-immigration folks expressing concerns that there will be some terrorists among the refugees and suggesting that we should not let them in for that reason.

Yup, we should probably just let all the refugees die at sea in case there's a potential terrorist among them. excaim

Sometimes you need to understand and take a risk if you want to be a decent human being.

I hope the Pope speaks out strongly on this when he visits the US.

Here's a link to the official White House petition asking the federal government to resettle Syrian refugees in the U.S.

Mbaldwin - How is that an official White House petition? Read it carefully. Also these people are not just coming from Syria. They are Afghans,Eritreans,as well as people from Pakistan,Nigeria and Kosovo.

The vast majority are refugees fleeing war and strife in their homelands. They are not migrants.

.

Being concerned about security is not being anti-immigrant, no one has said we should not let them in and apparently they are being screened and vetted before being admitted. If so it indicates there is some concern about security.

'Mbaldwin - How is that an official White House petition? Read it
carefully. Also these people are not just coming from Syria. They are
Afghans,Eritreans,as well as people from Pakistan,Nigeria and Kosovo.'

Do those of you proclaiming your casual disregard for security also agree we should simply allow in 'Afghans,Eritreans,as well as people from Pakistan,Nigeria and Kosovo.' with no concern for security?

As far as risk is concerned, with hundreds of thousands of refugees involved how many terrorists entering is too much of a risk - 100 - 50 - 25 -10 - 1?

History will judge us? How has history judged us when we screened these people (including my grand parents) and sent back to where they came from those that didn't meet the standard for entry?

You're still bragging about it and the risk to the country was far less from those people sent back than from a potential terrorist

It's a petition posted on whitehouse.gov in a section specifically build for folks to petition the President to take action on a subject they care about.

The full text of the petition is below:

Resettle Syrian Refugees in the U.S
By the end of April 2015 , the UN estimated 6.5 million people had been displaced in Syria, while more than +4 million refugees had fled to countries such as Lebanon (1.2 million), Jordan (608,000) and Turkey (1.75 million) and thousands more in Europe.

Germany expects to accept 800,000 asylum seekers this year, four times more than in 2014 and more than any other EU country. The US has so fare admitted less than 1000 Syrian refugees. United States of America; the most powerful nation, the largest economy, and the champion of democracy and human rights should stands for its values The International Rescue Committee has argued for the U.S. to accept at least 65,000 refugees.

We are asking the President and the government to pledge to resettle at least 65,000 Syrians by 2016.

In what way does that obviate the screening of these people in an attempt to insure security?

Oh, you're clever. So you screen them to the extent possible, then let them in. I'm positive there are dozens of families in MSO alone who would take in refugees without asking for government assistance. Simply because they are decent people.

I spend most of my waking hours in what most would consider terrorist target areas: Times Square, Penn Station, Port Authority, Grand Central, I work across the street from the Chrysler building. I fly regularly for business and leisure. Amount I worry about the detriment accepting refugees has on my safety? None.

The real security risk would be not helping these people. Think of the impact this is having on the many thousands of kids who in a few years will be trauma-scarred young adults--excellent terrorist-recruit candidates. But never mind that. We should help because it's the right thing to do.

And no one is talking about Government assistance. People in Maplewood who would accept them would be accepting them as guests, not charging them rent.

I never said not to screen them, but I'm also old enough to know that screening refugees will be a largely ceremonial task to cover political asses.

They're refugees. Are you expecting them to come to the border with passports and visas? I'm assuming many of them will have little, if not no, paperwork. I also assume rather unsavory characters will also be in the mix.

kosovars and pakistanis are concidered migrants

security checks take about 3 years to complete. All refugees are entitled to 8 months of public assistance.

Rep King is a anti muslim shrill.

The 9/11 terrorists arrived with valid passports and visas. There's no reason to think that terrorists are going to subject themselves to the internment, hunger, and ill-treatment awaiting most people fleeing a war zone.
