Interesting article on Midwest and rural America

Interesting article and well worth a read. Not saying he's right or wrong. "We are all real Americans, and it is time we start empathizing with one another more."

I think it's a great article. My aunt, a college-educated veterinarian's wife from rural Michigan, talked to her first black person ever at my wedding. He was handsome and charming (unfortunately, not the groom) and I could tell meeting him was an outlook-changing experience for her. In a similar experience, I used to work in the oil industry with a bunch of crusty old field engineers who would joke about dropping soap in the shower, etc. We hired a computer support technician, an incredibly outgoing, friendly lesbian. They all adored her, and after a while you never heard gay jokes any more. But who wants to be the token to parachute into white American and open their eyes?

meh - the fact is that rural America has been treated condescendingly by urban America for quite a long time.

I'm guessing they're kind of used to it. As are we New Jerseyans used to the disdain the rest of the country heaps on us.

Why, all of a sudden, is it relevant today?

Answer - it's probably not.

Sounds like the elite "director of user experience" wants everyone to know he's cool, not like his nerdy parents or the people he grew up with.

Or you could actually read the article before dismissing it. It's good, and not about what you seem to be assuming.

Thanks for posting. As someone from the midwest myself, this rings true.

As someone from the midwest, as I was referred to by my University of Michigan fellow students from NY (and from the east, according to my fellow students from Chicago,) I can relate.

you're right. I assumed. And we know where that leads.
