I think I need a new dictionary. My dictionary says SINGLE means ONE use. But these bags are being reused for garbage (non food such as tissues). The 2 I used to pick up after a neighbor's dog who left a present for me are already out. The bags being used for storage of things like old shoes I use when I will be walking in mud are not shown.....and according to the law, these bags are SINGLE use...
so I need e new dictionary that defines SINGLE as used at least 1 more time.
I've read that sales of plastic garbage bags are booming in areas that have banned plastic shopping bags. If the shopping bags were more durable, they would more likely be reused. Target used to be high quality and could be reused for multiple shopping trips, now they are thin and rip easy...making them hard to re use....I have resorted to sticking a piece of scotch tape over holes to make them usable.
Bring your own bags. It isn't too hard. And those plastic bags won't be missed in the street or our sewers, or washing into the river.
Jmitw, when we still lived where dogs could roam, their ‘presents’ could easily be wrapped in various promotional materials that left in our mailbox (despite the notice requesting no flyers). We’re now in a gated village where pets aren’t allowed.
Some friends get a free monthly newspaper for this purpose, and to wrap up various kitchen scraps they can’t compost. He grew up before plastic bags where easily available.
you can squeeze crap in your hand if you want, but I choose hygiene, when its not completely solid, paper will not do the job and besides, i would then need to put it in plastic to dispose of it..what am i supposed to do with it in the paper??? i sure as hell am not bringing in to stink up my house...it goes right in the trash, which requires it to be in plastics....of course if i saw who did it, i could just drop it back on their front step.
and it is difficult to get a good grip with thicker paper which would be needed at minimum...
but then again, if i didn't have to pick up after other people's pets it wouldn't be an issue.

The horror! Send me your address and I'll mail you a couple rolls of dedicated dog poop bags.

This nastiness seems unwarranted.
(Actually I used a small garden spade to place the deposit into the middle of the newspaper then made a bonbon package which I placed directly in my outdoor bin ready for Council collection with my other paper-wrapped waste. But I don’t expect everyone to make the same choices I do. I merely suggest alternatives they might not have thought of since we’ve been plastic-bag free a little longer)
Both Maplewood and SO have been handing out free reusable (sturdy, designed to hold up to multiple uses) bags at the start of the ban period. These bags have been readily available at street fairs, events, and the like. Maplewood even took up a collection of unwanted reusable bags to pass out to those who could not afford to purchase their own. As long as you are able to bring the bags you need with you, there is no need to pay the fee per paper bag. In Maplewood certain segments of the population - persons over age 65 and recipients of certain forms of public assistance - are not charged for paper bags. I assume the SO ordinance is similar.
Here’s a question for the group. If you get take out, do they charge you for the paper bag they put it in?
We had Chinese the other night. No plastic bag and no extra charge. But if they had added a nickle I don't think I would have complained.

From a South Orange restaurant?
Which one? What'd you have? Was it good?
At Stop and Shop - you can buy 2 reusable bags for $1 or pay 5 cents per paper bag.
