We recently commissioned a very comfortable sofa bed for my son's bedroom through "Carolina Chair". We chose the upgraded sofa bed called The Air Dream Ultra, and it is really comfortable, especially to sit on, which it is used for most of the time.
We found this company through their happy MOL customers, and they have made us three pieces so far. A large sleeper chair with a regular Air Dream Mattress, a swivel chair and matching footrest/storage thing, and most recently a queen sized sleeper sofa with the Air Dream Ultra.

It is very difficult to find a combination of comfortable to SLEEP on and comfortable to SIT on. Other sleepers with "wonderful mattresses" we checked were very firm and rather uncomfortable for sitting.
Good luck!
I'm sure you've already seen this from a quick google search:

While you can find a more comfortable one, none are going to be great for regular use by someone with a bad back.
thanks guys! this is for guests, so not for regular use. i would imagine most it would be used is 5-6 nights in a row…max??
Got it! I had a "good" sofa bed as my bed all through high school and, as good as it was, it was horrible!
Another possibility would be to get a day bed. This would give you maximum flexibility in choosing the best mattress to fit your needs.
i am looking for one…that's not a fortune…that's comfortable for bad backs. i have heard they've come a long way since i was young (bc there was no such thing as a sofa bed that was ok for a bad back). any/all recos please! thanks!
