Snow Skiing in December?

We were hoping to do a short family trip just before the holidays.  We were going to try Mountain Creek - but they probably won't have snow.  Any suggestions for where to go that's within a days trip that historically has snow in December?  Or do we need to go further north?

Thank you!

Excellent.  Just called them - they have slope side lodging too which is always great.  Thank you.

Another place we wanted to try was Jiminy Peak - has anyone ever been there early in the season?

This season is not normal. Way less snow than usual everywhere in the east. Places that would generally be open by now are closed, or only have a couple of runs open. I've been skiing Mount snow in southern VT, but that's more than a day trip.

Anyone been snow skiing this season?  Any recommendations given the weird weather?

My kids just left for Sugarloaf (Maine). Not a short trip from Maplewood, but doable in a day.

And when I say they just left, I mean ten minutes ago. It's college week up there.

Great - please post any feedback you get from your kids.

Yes we were at Killington VT over the early part of the holiday.  They got some nice snow last week though and it is very cold up there now so they are making as much as they can.  Skiing was decent but limited runs and have opened more recently.

I've been up to Killington several times starting at Thanksgiving and a week and half prior New Years.  They have one of the largest and most advanced snow making systems in the US which really helps in the weird weather we are having.  With the cold snap they will be opening new terrain rather quickly now.

It can be a day trip if you really need it to be as its about 4:30 hours door to door for us.  If you are looking for a place to stay let me know as I can give you recommendations as well.  There is everything from B&Bs to condos minuets from the slopes.

Edit: Pics were sent to me from today Jan 4th.

We just went skiing in Mt Tremblant, Canada - about 90 min north of Montreal. Total 8 hour drive from NJ. It snowed 2 ft this past weekend, so there's plenty of snow and the mountain is big for the east coast. Plus you get the feel of an French alpine village with Canadian congeniality.

There is now skiing available within a couple of hours of Maplewood in New York and Connecticut. I just read that Camelback will open on the 7th.

The beginner skier called to tell me he was having a great time. Skied from 8:30 am to 12 or so. Said it was really nice skiing early when few people were there, and then was a little less enjoyable as it became more crowded.

My sister was on an expert path, didn't see ice, hit it and wiped out. Sore but well enough to ski today.

My other son, intermediate/expert, must be having a great time, since I haven't heard a word from him.

I heard the mint white hot cocoa was phenomenal. Can I go for that alone?

This is Sugarloaf.

My kids have stayed and skied at Tremblant, and loved it as someone was saying above. It is quite wonderful for east coast skiing, and if you have a family member who doesn't ski and is coming along, is probably pretty entertaining for them, too, which some of the smaller ski lodges in Maine are not. You can sign up for their emails, and they'll send info about discounts, etc.

Have fun!

We're hoping the weather holds up through the weekend for a trip to Windham on Sunday. Fingers crossed.

got this in the mail (e-mail)
