Street closure information for tonight's event...

Great event. Kudos to the organizers.

Lots of people and lots of fun Thanks to the organizers. What a beautiful night!

So were young children permitted into the beer garden as long as they went with a parent? If not, needs improvement. And don't slam this comment. I have worked at the Maplewoodstock Beer Garden where that was permitted and sent a message to the S.O. Trustee, Ms. Collum about this.

I was actually going to say something about that too so you are not alone.

Thanks to the organizers of this event. grin

I was worried that the last minute change of date and the fact that it was moved to a weeknight would hurt attendance.

I am glad to see that I was wrong to think that would be an issue. I am also very happy to see that this time they extended it to include the stores at the other end of the strip. IIRC last year it stopped at Fairview.

I am looking forward to next year's event

Great event! So much fun, great yummy food choices & I really enjoyed the music ...oh, and seeing so many friends & neighbors. My hubby went back to get his drink on with pals while I put the kids to bed. Thankfully we stopped at Morgan's for some wine & craft beer for me to drink at home. oh oh

I think they posted previously it is against the law in NJ to allow kids in the biergarten. They may have gotten around that at Maplewoodstock by putting a fenced in kids area adjacent to the fenced in biergarten. It was too packed for me to really see what was going on.

Fun event with a nice turnout. Hope this becomes a regular event.

Two constructive critiques for next time:

1) With that amount of people, even more food trucks are needed. The lines for food were pretty hefty.

2) Better traffic control was needed. Village Rd had cars parked on both sides, making it impossible for 2 cars to pass and caused some serious stalemates for a while. If an Emergency vehicle had to get through, it would have been disastrous.

Oh gosh, were they allowed?! I could really have used a beer grin

It was a nice event. Unfortunately we didn't actually get to eat dinner from the food trucks. We waited about 15 minutes at the grilled cheese truck before learning they were out of bread, and another 10-15 for pizza before they announced they were close to running out. If I hadn't had my kids with me it might not have been a big deal, but they were really hungry by that point so it was a little frustrating. However, we gave up and wandered over to Guanatico's for the first time and it was DELICIOUS. So that was a happy accident! We did get a cupcake from the truck, at least, so my son was excited about that! And I stopped in to Morgan's to grab a 6-pack for home. A good night overall.

I'm not sure how to play it better next year. There were so many delicious-looking options, but it did kinda suck to commit to a line, wait a while and then be turned away. Maybe super early or a lot later would have been better? We were there around 7

Ditto more trucks. This is obviously going to be a popular event if they keep holding it so yes to many more trucks. And also seeing if it is possible to get a few more tables set up outside the beer garden so tea totaler families have more options to sit down at.

We were lucky. We showed up early and were able to hit the cheese curd truck, the pizza truck, moo & oink, and the banana truck. If we hadn't gotten there at 5pm I don't think we would have been able to get food from even two of the trucks, forget four trucks. Since it was still light out we didn't mind sitting on the grass where the kids were playing and eating there, but after dark that option would seem a lot less appealing.

This is a really great event and I think it does to a lot to help bring publicity to the businesses in that part of town

And I just want to add that I loved the picture booth. We got the cutest family picture there.

Missed the photo booth. Dang!! Def need more trucks. It wasn't bad waiting on the lines and talking to my neighbors but it really did take too long.

And I appreciated no kids in the bier garden. Sometimes it is nice not to have the wee ones around as long as there were other options for them. Maybe a corral with teenage babysitters? Not sure of the insurance liability though. Just some ideas to throw out!.

Basically, it was a blast!!

Great event, having it on a weeknight gave me an excuse to avoid having to cook dinner after work. grin

Hoping for more food trucks and shorter lines next year. The DH, who doesn't do lines, gave up pretty quickly and went off to get a gluten free pizza from the Village Trat. Speaking of GF -- there was almost nothing available, except maybe at the taco truck, which had one of the longest lines...

We had a fun time. We got to see some people we know, and my daughter enjoyed the grilled cheese and the taco she had. I hope this is an ongoing tradition.

I was there with my wife and young daughter for the first half, then went back later with friends to enjoy the beer garden. I thought it was well organized and run. Plenty of porta-potties, and even when I used one at the end of the evening it was pretty clean and there was plenty of Purell left in the dispenser (yay!). The garbage cans were emptied before there was a major problem with litter. So a big shout-out to the DPW.

My thoughts for the organizers (at no charge!):

  1. Yes more tables please! We ate dinner sitting on the curb in front of Morgan's.
  2. Yes more trucks please! The wait for food was very long. The food was excellent but my wife and I stood in two separate lines for almost an hour to get our dinner. Maybe bring in a couple of trucks which serve kid-friendly food more quickly.
  3. Keep the beer garden adults-only. If kids had been allowed in the beer garden last night it would have been overrun with families looking for a table at which to eat, and the people who were there to enjoy the different beers would have been crowded out. I now there are family-friendly beer gardens in Queens and Hoboken and elsewhere, but this one relies on one night of beer sales to be viable year after year. Crowd out the beer drinkers and you lose revenue.

So good job to everyone involved and I'm looking forward to next year!

The Kibbeboys and I had a BLAST! Lots of choices but because we're never satisfied, wished there were more. By the time my older K-Boy arrived, the lines were crazy long. He was starved so by request, we got Munchie's for him oh oh Because the other K-Boy and I arrived fairly early (5:15'ish) he was able to taste, sans lines. He had a fat zzz bbq grilled mac and cheese and then a noodle dish from the Japanese food truck. He devoured it all! We wanted to sample the Belgium waffle truck but it stayed closed for quite a while and when opened, of course, the line was insane.

Great, great fun! Great, great job by all!

Sounds like a lovely event...but I'm glad I didn't try to attend on my own with three kids. We actually had a quick dinner out elsewhere, after a crazy afternoon.

Too many lines, too few seats, and no access to beer for adults who need to supervise kids? Definitely wouldn't have been a happy destination for us last night.

But I'm thrilled to see the event succeeding, as our time to attend it will eventually come (if it isn't always scheduled the same night as our synagogue's congregational dinner in the sukkah!)

The issues mentioned above are reflections of its success, even during midweek. Thanks to everyone involved. Hopefully the right tweaks are made for next year.

The beer garden setup is a little odd when just one parent is having a drink, but I handled it better than Harry Dean Stanton did.

And one more little unsolicited tip for parents of the stroller set: In a crowd like that, your little ones are much better off being kept in their strollers (or in your arms) -- mainly so they won't get stepped on or lost, but also so they won't toddle around grabbing on to strangers, hitting people with their balloons, or pushing their own strollers over other people's toes...

Be aware, this can happen in the beer garden as well with no kids.

Agree with @michalegoldberg re: parking. We turned up Village Road before realizing there was a stalemate between two cars - one that was able to back up (and finally did) and one that had no where to go with cars behind him and parked on two sides. Crazy situation. More trucks may not mean shorter lines, but more is more! Kimchi Smoke is a favorite at SHU.

DH, does not have the patience required for these events - especially when the line he finally agrees to stand in runs out of bread around 7 - while he sent a guy for more, given the traffic and parking, we estimated that it would be at least an hour before his guy made it back to the truck, so we moved on, visited Morgans (great addition to the area) and went out for dinner. I have food truck envy now. Next year I will attend early - and alone!
