Selling a used fur coat

I have inherited an ankle length fur coat. I have no idea of what kind of fur it is so I can't even guess as to its value. Do I take it to a consignment shop? A fur shop? I'll never wear it and letting it just sit in the closet until it rots just seems a waste.

Take it over to the Fur Salon in South Orange to find out what it is and if it has any value. I have no idea if they buy used furs, but knowing what you have will help you sell it.

They restyle furs. You could have it remade into something you might wear such as a short jacket or vest. (I received a fur as a gift and was amazed at how much I liked it since it was so warm in the winter.)

This past fall I had my 16 yo+ full length mink shortened at the fur vault at the Short Hills Macy's. I wore it more this past year than I have in the past 15. It cost $255. My coat was in great shape, no other repairs needed, so it was definitely worth it. I had it shortened to right above my knee.

Can you post a photo? Someone here might have a guess as to what it is. But I agree with those who say take it to a fur salon and see what they say.

Trying to upload the picture.

Beaver? Shorten it and cuff the sleeves and it could look hip. It will certainly keep you warm this winter.

Have it made into a blanket?

Wityh the leftover fur, make a matching hat, or a vest!

Give it to the Salvation Army and take a tax deduction.

It looks like racoon or (more valuable) black fox fur. Check out Craigslist in Brooklyn. Eastern European language newspapers would be a good bet, and many have free "for sale" section (you can place your ad in English).

I've heard that some people use old furs as a raincoat liner? I sold mine on swap meet a few years ago for $50. There just isn't that much demand for fur anymore.
