we've stayed at the Hotel Lombardy in DC. It's not all that close to American -- actually walking distance from the White House. But it's inexpensive, so you could get 2 rooms for the price you'd pay for a suite most other places. It's an old school hotel, so not a lot of amenities, but it's a good, clean, no frills place to stay at a reasonable price.
Our daughter graduated from AU in 2013. We always stayed at Marriott Wardman Park. Very close to AU and top notch hotel. I highly recommend it, and they do have suites. TK
Thank you, m1 and tom kearns! Both look like good prospects and I am pitching them to the group. b.
Schools usually list nearby hotels on their website:

Family members have made a last minute decision to attend my niece's graduation from American University. We need a hotel for Saturday night. The graduation is Sunday at 10:00am. We head back to NJ the same day. There are 4 of us so maybe a suite hotel????
I would appreciate any tips MoL's DC-heads might want to give.
