Revolutionary spike found in Maplewood, now on eBay

There is a Revolutionary pike that was found at 36 Maplewood Ave in 1942. It was found while preparing a Victory garden. Currently on eBay for about $250, in case anyone is interested in a piece of local history.

You left out the Captain Ahab part.

Pike, not spike.

Be nice if someone bought it and donated it to the Durand Hedden house.

Funny you should say that as that's what I thought about doing, but not at 250.  Not sure that's even worth the 250.  The current owners of he house may be interested, though.  Anyone know them?

Maybe set up a Go Fund Me and we all chip in $10?

Thanks Dave, for adding the picture. If I lived at 36 Maplewood, I certainly would be interested, but that is really a lot of $$. The idea of funding and donating to Durand is really a great idea, I,d throw some money towards that.

It is an interesting object. I don't know if it belongs in the house if the house is privately owned. Maybe the library or town hall.

Since there is interest, 25 people giving $10. (add shipping) would work. Where could the money be collected?

Jack:

Point of Information:  The Durand Hedden House houses Maplewood's Historical Society/Museum.  It is not the location where the pike was found.

how does anyone know its real ?

You don't, really.  I'll accept the Maplewood connection at face value, but have no clue if that's a period pike or not.

I keep a search on Ebay for Maplewood and other places of interest to me  I saw that posting  and sent a message asking for more info and validation

I will let you know if I get any answer

reason I ask is my brother creates a treasure hunt for his son and friends up at their lake house- he makes a map and "ages it" and then makes a whole bunch of "finds" that are "aged" ... Given he has been doing this for years it is likely something he buried several years ago could be found and mis-understood

It is good to be skeptical.  Consider the case of the "Malibu Barbie".

I am mildly suspect about that pike as the wood is still in tact and it looks very "fresh" considering that it was buried in the ground. But most historians would be dubious first, then go forward to attempt to prove of disprove its provenance.

The listing ended - did a Maplewoodian get it?

Wow, that sold fast, I think it was supposed to end in a week or so. It would have been great to see that back in town.

Oh, rats!   Maybe someone from Maplewood bought it.
