Questions about Elderberry

Does anyone know if it is ok to plant male and female elderberry plants together? I read online that you are supposed to plant then within 60 feet of each other.  I bought an elderberry plant at the Garden Club plant sale which can has both plants in the same small pot.  I'm trying to figure out if you can put both plants in the same hole or if you have to separate them, and if so, how far apart in the garden should they be planted?  Here's a photo of the plant.

Do you know whether you bought straight species or cultivars (with names)? If they are species, you shouldn't have to worry about male and female. They are self-pollinating, with male and female parts on the same plant. Cultivars are too, but because cultivars are genetic clones, they need a different cultivar nearby to ensure a lot of berries. Not that you'll actually get the berries before the birds.  Anyway, if you haven't already planted them, yes, you can plant them in the same hole. Elderberries grow into thickets with multiple stems. They won't mind sharing as long as there is adequate moisture. I have mine in a very wet spot, where the neighbor's downspout and sump pump release downhill into our yard. After three seasons, they are around 8 feet tall and just about as wide.
