Then what was all that about the funky little Mexican fishing boat circling a COMPLETELY EMPTY "yacht"--no one was on deck, and no one answered his "ahoy"--except for the baby screaming hysterically below deck? The ladder was still down, the life preserver she had thrown out was still floating..............
Well, I'll take your word for it. My take was that no one but the baby survived, after all that struggling.
The emphasis on the fact that the fishing boat circle the entire boat and there was no sign of anyone--until he heard the baby crying--seemed to me to clearly indicate the boat was empty. No one lying on deck, and certainly not her standing there. Then, suddenly, there they were.
Perhaps it was just really badly done, and thus very confusing, and I'm not missing anything at all?
Thanks for that. Very entertaining. So it wasn't just me that was completely perplexed by the ending.
From the review:
"The fishing boat sees an abandoned ship, but we are also treated to a brief dream-like sequence with Mom and McSteamy aboard. What are we supposed to believe?! I guess its up to us to decide. Thats so artistic. Just really, amazingly thought-provoking. I love how folks will slap on an ambiguous ending to an otherwise dreadfully *****ty flick and try to convince us we just saw something profound."
I just caught this on cable. I was moved by the first Open Water - I knew someone who survived a ferry sinking in Indonesia while working for Save the Children - so I've always been intrigued by the idea of sea survival.
But this movie annoyed me from the start. Every premise was absurd. What mother AND father jump into water with no one on board and their infant child sleeping? Then there are the routine plot contrivances. I love how they try to make a rope once and fail, then give up? Then, of course, let's beat each other up in the ocean so we can be tired, thirsty, cold and physically impaired!?!
But the end was what clinched it for me! The Mom loses her husband and two friends (I'm assuming the other woman who tried to rip off her life vest WASN'T a friend) and finally gets on the boat to save her starving, scared and possibly hurt baby. Then she LEAVES THE BOAT again to go save the low-life that got her into all this trouble! I just couldn't believe it! No mother on the planet would willingly put herself back in that situation. Especially since it was clear that the dude wanted to die. Good riddance.
Ugh, I'm with a previous poster...I want my 90 minutes back. This was garbage!
My problem: I TOTALLY did not get the ending. Did anyone see this that can explain it to me.
