Resurrecting a zombie thread to inquire if others had luck with this. PSEG sent us a nastygram about not reading the meter for 18 months. They want a key - hell no.
Is there a good way to get the remote-read meter?
I am sick of those nasty PSEG vms. At least 4 times in the past 6 months there has been some one home on the day the meter-reader was supposed to come by. Never have we heard a knock on the door or the doorbell ring. I think the guy sleeps in his truck and then reports that no one was home. If they want access to my house they can knock on the door or ring the bell for heaven's sake! If I thought I could reach an actual living person, I would call them....
Wow. I say hi to him every month. Maybe twice a year we miss each other.
I had a remote meter installed a number of years ago. I think it was after about the 15th time I called because I got a (wrong) estimated reading. I would put a post it on the door with the reading and they would never register it. No surprises now.
We got a remote meter installed after we got estimated readings for about 1.5yrs after we moved in because, truly, never having to deal with the gas bill before while living in JC or NYC, we did not know we had to do place the meter readings on the window. Once they finally came in and we got a very large $1200 bill (house was estimated very low since it had been empty for about 2 yrs), and while discussing how to pay for this bill, they simply offered us a remote meter. We really did not even have to ask. So in conclusion, if you fail to provide the readings for a long time, you are more likely to get a meter, or at least that was our experience. But you will end up with a very large bill to pay off although they will give you 12 months to do so

No, you do not have to pay.
In the past they did make people pay, so double check with PSE&G on this.
